Michael Carrick has been told to use Sir Alex Ferguson’s infamous hairdryer treatment to ensure Manchester United’s season does not fall away. The former Red Devils’ star has had a brilliant impact at Old Trafford since being appointed until the end of the campaign.
Carrick has won seven of his 11 games, leading the side into the top four. He lost just his second game last weekend as United slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Leeds at Old Trafford.
And while United remain in a positive position in the race for the Champions League spots, former United star Lee Sharpe has said that Carrick might need to adopt a slightly harsher stance with the squad to ensure their stumble does not become a more serious slip.
"Michael Carrick and Sir Alex Ferguson are polar opposite personalities,” Sharpe told football betting site BetWright. "Carrick seems quite calm; the players have already spoken about his approach when he came in.
“Since joining the club, he’s put an arm around them and identified each of their strengths. He was a class act as a player and is a class act as a man and that will continue during his managerial career.
"Sir Alex Ferguson was completely different, he ruled through fear. He came in and scared everyone to death and had an aggressive team.
“The spine of his team was unmatched, but he was on top of everyone and that drew out the success from the team. You can’t argue with Sir Alex’s record as manager.
“Ideally, Carrick should take a bit of aggression from Sir Alex to give the players a kick up the backside on occasion - which is what they needed during and after the Leeds game."

Carrick is of course no stranger to Ferguson’s hairdryer treatment. The midfielder played under the legendary former United boss for seven seasons, making 319 appearances under the Scot.
United will continue their push for a Champions League spot under Carrick this weekend. The Red Devils go to Chelsea on Saturday evening.
United currently sit three points clear of Liverpool, who sit in the final Champions League place with six games of the season to be played.
Club chiefs might then be faced with a difficult decision over the manager’s role. Carrick was originally only appointed until the end of the season, albeit the club’s long-term targets now appear to be out of reach.
