An ex-Premier League footballer has been banned from driving for six months after being caught speeding at 100mph in a 70mph zone.

Former Manchester City, Leeds United and Sunderland player Ian Poveda, 26, was stopped by a police officer who saw him speeding in his black Range Rover. The winger, who was still on Sunderland's books at the time, was caught on the A184 in South Tyneside at around 8.45am on Sunday, February 23 last year.

The winger, who has also turned out for Blackburn Rovers, Sheffield Wednesday and Blackpool, did not attend a hearing at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court. The London-born Colombia international left Sunderland last month and has signed for Internacional de Bogota.

Brian Payne, prosecuting, told the court that a police officer saw the Range Rover accelerate away on the A184 dual-carriageway.

He said:" It is clear that the Range Rover was travelling well in excess of the speed limit. I am going to suggest it was at about 100mph in a 70mph zone."

The officer signalled for the car to stop and Poveda pulled over immediately. Janice Hall, defending, said her client's speeding was "for a very short period of time".

Poveda had nine points on his licence at the time after three previous speeding offences, the court heard.

Magistrates banned the player for six months under the totting up procedure, having imposed another six points on his licence.

After admitting the offence, he was fined £800, with a £320 surcharge and £600 costs.

Poveda started his career in Chelsea's academy, in the same year group alongside Reece James, Conor Gallagher, Marc Guehi and Rhian Brewster, before moving to Arsenal and then Barcelona.

He later joined Brentford, before Manchester City swooped for the highly-rated teenager. Poveda made on appearance in the League Cup for Pep Guardiola's side before signing for Leeds.

He was eligible to play for England and Colombia at international level, but after appearing for the Three Lions at every level up to U20, he made the switch to Colombia in 2023.
