Why Michael Carrick thinks two Man Utd talents are club's'future'after rating their current'level'

Michael Carrick has insisted that it is “hard” to predict the futures of Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven ahead of the two Manchester United stars’ biggest test so far.

The 44-year-old Manchester United legend is expected to start both Leny Yoro and Ayden Heaven for the Premier League match against Chelsea on Saturday evening.

Michael Carrick has been hit with a defensive crisis in the tail end of his interim reign after Lisandro Martinez and Harry Maguire were ruled out of action due to suspensions.

The United interim head coach is also without long-term injury absentee Matthijs de Ligt for the huge Premier League visit to Stamford Bridge this weekend.

Michael Carrick thinks Ayden Heaven and Leny Yoro are both well-positioned in their Man Utd careers at their current stage

Ayden Heaven had not made a single Premier League start in Michael Carrick’s 11-match Premier League reign since Ruben Amorim was sacked as Man Utd manager.

The 19-year-old Manchester United defender, who arrived at Old Trafford from Arsenal in 2025, has made four sporadic Premier League cameos under Carrick.

Leny Yoro, unlike Heaven, has played a more prominent Man Utd role under Carrick during Lisandro Martinez’s calf injury ahead of the March international break.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Carrick refused to speculate on the futures of Yoro and Heaven and instead rated the ‘level’ that the duo are at now.

“It’s hard to predict the future, but we’re delighted to have both of them,” he said on Friday, as per the Manchester Evening News.

“And the age they are, playing for such a big club, is not always the case. It’s not always easy or straightforward, but I think the level they are at right now is a really good stage.

“The future is the future; they need to keep progressing and we’ll give them the opportunity to do that. They are probably in as good [of] a place [as] you can be at their age for centre-backs.”

Michael Carrick rates Ayden Heaven’s development highly at Man Utd ahead of a major challenge against Chelsea

Heaven had been in and out of the Man Utd starting XI under Ruben Amorim after he left Premier League side Arsenal and moved to Old Trafford.

Carrick has little choice but to turn to the former Gunners talent now and has hinted that Heaven is ready to step up for Man Utd for the trip to Stamford Bridge.

“Ayden is in a good place,” he said.

“He’s still young, and he’s progressing through the early stages of his career, so I think it’s natural for him to play some games and not some others.

“He’s training really well, improving and listening. It’s natural for a centre-back of his age, and he’s ahead of schedule in terms of the games he’s played.

“He trained with England a few weeks ago and did well. He’s looking forward to the game, for sure.”

Heaven has made 15 appearances across all competitions for the Red Devils ahead of Man Utd’s Premier League encounter with Chelsea on Saturday evening.
