Former England boss Sam Allardyce has urged Manchester United to move swiftly for Igor Thiago, claiming the Red Devils should “look no further” than the prolific Brentford striker as they seek to bolster their attacking options.
The 22-year-old forward has emerged as one of the Premier League’s most effective goal scorers this season, netting 21 goals and attracting growing attention from top clubs. His performances have been a standout for Brentford, combining physical presence with clinical finishing — traits that Allardyce believes are perfectly suited to Manchester United’s current needs.
Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football podcast, Allardyce made his position clear: “I mean, who’s going to buy Brentford’s centre-forward, Igor Thiago? Manchester United need to look no further as far as I’m concerned. He’s hit the 20-goal mark, you don’t need to look any further.
‘I thought they’d go for [Jean-Philippe] Mateta, but maybe with his age they thought better of it. But this Brazilian lad [Thiago], he’s scored 20 goals already and has got Brentford almost pushing for Europe.”
Manchester United’s search for a dependable centre-forward has been a recurring theme in recent transfer windows. While the club has invested heavily in attacking talent, inconsistency in front of goal has remained an issue, particularly in high-pressure fixtures. Thiago’s goal return places him among the league’s elite finishers this campaign, strengthening the argument for a potential move to Old Trafford.
Brentford, however, are under no immediate pressure to sell. The West London club has built a reputation for shrewd recruitment and strong negotiating positions, meaning any deal would likely require a significant transfer fee. With Thiago under contract and central to Brentford’s system, United would need to act decisively to secure his signature amid expected competition.
Opinion: Why Thiago could transform United’s attack
From a tactical standpoint, Thiago represents a profile Manchester United currently lack. His physicality allows him to operate effectively as a traditional No. 9, holding up play and bringing others into the game — something that has often been missing in United’s forward line.
Equally important is his efficiency. Scoring 21 Premier League goals in a side that does not dominate possession suggests a striker who maximizes chances rather than relying on volume. At a club like United, where creative players generate more opportunities, Thiago’s output could feasibly increase further.
Another compelling factor is his work rate. Brentford’s system demands defensive contribution from its forwards, and Thiago has shown a willingness to press, track back, and disrupt opposition build-up. This aligns with the modern demands of top-level football and would suit United’s evolving style.
There is also a psychological element. Players who succeed at clubs like Brentford often develop resilience and discipline — qualities essential for handling the scrutiny that comes with playing for Manchester United. Thiago’s rise suggests a player comfortable with responsibility, not overwhelmed by it.
