Manchester United are looking for a new head coach, and dealing with the situation cautiously.
After sacking Ruben Amorim at the start of 2026, Manchester United chose to make a temporary appointment in the short-term. Michael Carrick was hired until the end of the season.
Carrick has been a successful hire so far, and he has become a contender for the permanent job.
But Manchester United are not going to blindly appoint him without exploring alternative options.
Nagelsmann is interested in the role, according to TEAMtalk. And earlier this week GiveMeSport reported that United are set to reach out to the Germany manager.

Latest on Julian Nagelsmann
Manchester United are being deliberately cautious at present. This has been evidenced by the way the club has not rushed into appointing Michael Carrick permanently already.
Speaking to the United Stand, Ben Jacobs acknowledges the club’s interest in Nagelsmann, but says there has been no contact.

Jacobs explained: “He’s one of the names that’s formed part of their internal conversations.
“I’m getting pushback from sources that they’ve made any formal contact at this stage.”
But he did explain that Nagelsmann would rather hold talks now than at the end of the current season, due to his own current commitments.
“Julian Nagelsmann is open to opportunities now and less inclined to have conversations closer to the World Cup.”
It sounds like the push for early talks is coming from Nagelsmann’s side rather than Manchester United.

Nagelsmann’s connection at United
Julian Nagelsmann has experience managing at the top level, coaching in the Champions League with both RB Leipzig and Bayern Munich.
Nagelsmann has a big connection at Manchester United, previously working with Christopher Vivell at RB Leipzig.
Vivell is now United’s head of recruitment, and while this might not have a huge bearing on him being hired, it could enhance his chances of success if he is appointed.
For now, Michael Carrick remains in the driving seat. He has a tough audition over the coming weeks, with six games remaining this season.
