Marcel Desailly has had enough of Chelsea and their recent form. The Chelsea legend watched his former club lose three of their last four Premier League games. He did not hold back when given the chance to address the elephant in the room. The World Cup winning Frenchman has publicly called out Robert Sanchez and told the Blues in no uncertain terms. The goalkeeping position needs urgent attention this summer.
Desailly spoke exclusively to a podcast and his words carried the weight of someone who genuinely cares about where Chelsea are heading. He pointed directly at the lack of consistency in the goalkeeper position as a key reason why the Blues cannot string results together in the Premier League.
As per reports, Desailly said, “No consistency because the goalkeeper is not up to the level.
“***He made a mistake, he does not come out to give that strength to the defence. You need to have international players as first choice in most positions of your team. The goalkeeper should be upgraded by someone who does not make mistakes.***“
He also widened his criticism to cover the club’s broader recruitment approach. Urging the ownership to shift their thinking away. From collecting young talent and toward signing players who can make an immediate Premier League impact.
“They need four experienced players in the squad to match with the young, talented players that we have in the side”. He added, “identifying a centre back and a striker as further priorities alongside a new goalkeeper.”

Has Sanchez Done Enough for Chelsea and Desailly
Robert Sanchez arrived at Stamford Bridge from Brighton in 2023 and has delivered flashes of genuine quality across his time at the club. He was outstanding during certain stretches of last season and even won the Golden Glove at the Club World Cup final. Where his performance in the decisive match against PSG was exceptional.
This season, however, has been far more difficult. Sanchez lost his place to Filip Jorgensen at several points. Then regained it when Jorgensen’s costly errors in the Champions League against PSG ended his own run in the team.
Desailly’s point cuts to the heart of the problem. London Blue’s centre backs, including Wesley Fofana when fit, are capable Premier League defenders. But a goalkeeper who can command his area, communicate with authority and make the big saves in big moments can transform an entire backline. Stamford Bridge has not had one since Thibaut Courtois departed nearly a decade ago.

What Comes Next for the club?
The Blues have Mike Penders waiting in the wings and long considered a future number one at the club. At just 20 years old, the Belgian is highly rated within the club’s coaching setup but may not yet be ready to carry the pressure of week in, week out Premier League football at a club with Blue’s expectations.
That reality makes the summer transfer window all the more important. Names like James Trafford, Mile Svilar of Roma and others have already been mentioned in connection with the club.

Author’s Insight
Desailly speaking out publicly is significant because he is not a pundit with an agenda. He is a former Chelsea captain who spent six years at the club and understands what it takes to win at the highest level. The summer window is the moment to fix this properly. One goalkeeper, one clear number one, and no more uncertainty. The London Blues owe their fans that much at the very least.
