Everything you need to know about Coventry City's title hopes
Promotion permutations: To secure automatic promotion, Coventry City simply need to avoid defeat against Blackburn Rovers on Friday night. A single point from this fixture, which kicks off at 8pm, would move them to 86 points and mathematically guarantee a top-two finish regardless of other results.
Matchday Details at Ewood Park: The Sky Blues travel to face a Blackburn side currently fighting at the opposite end of the table in 20th place. This crucial away fixture is the primary focus for Frank Lampard's side, as a win or a draw officially ends their long-awaited quest for Premier League football.
Ipswich Town and Millwall: Ipswich Town currently sit in second place with 75 points and have a game in hand, making them the only team that could theoretically catch Coventry. However, because third-place Millwall only have 73 points with four games left, Coventry’s current 85-point haul is already nearly insurmountable for the chasing pack.
Crowning the Champions: While promotion can be secured tonight, the Championship title could also be decided this weekend if Coventry win their match. If the Sky Blues take all three points on Friday and Ipswich Town lose to Middlesbrough on Sunday at 12pm, Coventry will be crowned champions with three games to spare.
Ipswich’s role: The Tractor Boys host Middlesbrough at Portman Road in a high-stakes match that could impact the timing of Coventry’s potential trophy lift. Should Ipswich win, the title race will technically continue into the next midweek round of fixtures, even if Coventry’s promotion is already confirmed.
Wider context: This potential promotion marks a historic turnaround for a club that was playing in League Two as recently as 2018. After the heartbreak of the 2023 play-off final, reaching the Premier League automatically would represent the culmination of a rebuilding project.
Sky Blues lead pack: Coventry have been the dominant force this season, boasting a massive goal difference of +42 and leading in goals scored with 84. Their consistency has seen them pull 10 points clear of second place, turning the final weeks of the season into a victory lap rather than a nervous scramble.
Time for celebration: Regardless of tonight's result, Coventry have two home games remaining in April to celebrate with their supporters. Following the Blackburn trip, they return home to face Portsmouth on Tuesday at 7.45pm, where they hope to be introduced as a Premier League club.
