Influential Decision Maker Is‘Friends’With Carrick’s Biggest Rival For Man Utd Job–Report

Julian Nagelsmann’s candidacy to be the next Man Utd manager will have strong backing from head of recruitment Christopher Vivell, according to reports.

The pair crossed paths at RB Leipzig, but writing for The Athletic, journalist Laurie Whitwell said the two men maintain a strong relationship, and it could prove influential in who gets the job:

“Christopher Vivell, who was important in the Benjamin Sesko and Senne Lammens signings, is friends with Nagelsmann and would doubtless speak highly of his qualities.”

“The pair worked together at RB Leipzig before Nagelsmann managed Bayern Munich to the Bundesliga title.”

Vivell will not make the final decision

Even though the German administrator’s opinion is clearly listened to, based on the fact that two of his recommended signings were purchased last summer, he will not be the one putting forward the name of the favoured managerial candidate to the board.

That decision will rest with Director of Football Jason Wilcox. At the moment, no final choice has been made, but it’s clear that Nagelsmann is still in the running.

Carrick is the favourite to become the permanent Man Utd boss

While Michael Carrick does have competition from Nagelsmann and several other candidates, Whitwell’s colleague at The Athletic, David Ornstein, still thinks the 44-year-old is in “pole position” to get the role for the long-term.

However, it must be pointed out that things could change over the next few weeks. While due diligence and background checks have been completed, no interviews have taken place so far.

The appointment process is expected to advance to face-to-face talks with favoured candidates before the end of the season, and we will probably get a better idea about who the leading contender is soon.
