Man Utd’s FA Youth Cup squad decision leaves Michael Carrick stranded, but it’s genius long-term

Manchester United U18s are in the final of another FA Youth Cup, but only because the club took a long-term view of the squad.

Just a day before Man Utd take on Chelsea at Stamford Bridge, the U18s did their job in style as they won 2-1 against Crystal Palace to progress to the final of the FA Youth Cup.

A mouth-watering Manchester Derby awaits in the final, but for the first team, this FA Youth Cup game was interesting.

That is because Michael Carrick is sure to be left stranded due to the club’s decision, but will stand to benefit in the long-term from it.

Man Utd FA Youth Cup decision leaves Michael Carrick stranded

The FA Youth Cup has long been one of the proud traditions at Old Trafford, with the club going all-in on the tournament every year.

The likes of Kobbie Mainoo, Alejandro Garnacho, and recently JJ Gabriel and Chido Obi have announced themselves in this tournament.

United coaches prioritise development over winning at the academy level, but the Youth Cup is where the priorities shift.

That was reflected in the team selection against Crystal Palace, with United starting their best academy players in somewhat of an “All-Star” team.

Gabriel started with Obi, Noah Ajayi, Godwill Kukonki, Jim Thwaites, and more, but this was an interesting decision due to a unique set of circumstances this time.

That is because the first team is desperate for numbers, especially in defence, in the wake of Leny Yoro’s injury, along with suspensions for Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez.

In such a situation, United could have been forgiven for drafting someone like Kukonki or Daniel Armer to the first-team squad to pad up the defensive numbers.

However, they took the long-term view of the squad and focused on what’s best for the players instead.

It leaves Carrick a bit stranded in terms of defensive numbers, but even he would appreciate the club’s stance on this.

High-stakes academy game vs meaningless squad place

Even if somebody like Kukonki was drafted into the first team, it would be unlikely that he’d be used at Stamford Bridge for his debut.

The experience of playing a competitive semifinal at Old Trafford is far more meaningful than warming up with the first-team squad and then watching the game from the bench.

Had the academy fixture been a regular league game instead of the FA Youth Cup semifinal, or if the senior team wasn’t travelling for such a marquee game, United could have drafted in youngsters.

As it stands, it was a no-brainer decision for the club to let the youngsters feel the responsibility of creating their own legacy in a storied youth tournament.

This will do more for their mentality and readiness than a meaningless squad place for a game they would never come off the bench in.
