Liam Rosenior says£48.5m Chelsea player may not play again this season

Liam Rosenior has adopted a cautious stance regarding Jamie Gittens’ recovery, refusing to set a definitive return date despite the winger showing really positive signs.

Jamie Gittens’ debut season at Chelsea has been a frustrating one. Following his £48.5 million move from Borussia Dortmund last summer, the 21-year-old winger initially justified the hype, providing a much-needed directness to the Blues’ attack, but things haven’t gone well.

The England Under-21 international has not featured since the 3–2 victory over West Ham, having sustained a significant hamstring tear that has seen him miss over two months of action.

A recent attempt to reintegrate Gittens into the matchday squad for the FA Cup quarter-final against Port Vale resulted in a fresh setback during training, marking the third time this season he has succumbed to a similar muscle injury.

While his talent is obvious, Gittens’ primary challenge for the remainder of 2026 remains proving his long-term durability to Liam Rosenior.

Liam Rosenior issues an update on Jamie Gittens

The Standard have shared some comments from Liam Rosenior on Jamie Gittens’, stating that he may not even be back again this season.

“I can’t give you a definitive answer on that. Jamie actually has responded really well, but I don’t want to put pressure on him. The same [for Filip Jorgensen].”

Filip Jorgensen remains sidelined with a persistent groin injury that required minor surgery in March.

While Liam Rosenior noted the goalkeeper is responding well to rehabilitation, he also may not play again for the rest of the season.

Alejandro Garnacho offered more of a chance

With Jamie Gittens likely sidelined for the remainder of the campaign, Alejandro Garnacho has a final opportunity to rescue his stuttering Chelsea career.

Since his move from Manchester United last summer, the 21-year-old has struggled for consistency, finding himself on the periphery of Liam Rosenior’s plans after managing just one Premier League goal.

The hierarchy are weighing up Garnacho’s future ahead of the summer window, so these final fixtures represent an audition for the Argentine to prove he can still be a long-term fixture.
