Jim Thwaites proves Ruben Amorim right in FA Youth Cup win, Man Utd must handle him differently

Manchester United U18s are in the final of the FA Youth Cup, and Jim Thwaites sent a message that the club must handle him differently.

The FA Youth Cup semifinal win will show goals by JJ Gabriel and Chido Obi in the record books, but Jim Thwaites pulled the strings from behind.

Thwaites has long been identified as one of the brightest talents at Carrington, but he has had somewhat of a weird trajectory so far.

He has bossed the game at the U18s level, but hasn’t been trusted as a regular for the U21s, let alone the senior team. He addressed that with his display in the 2-1 win against Crystal Palace U18s.

Jim Thwaites proves Amorim right in FA Youth Cup win

By the end of his time at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim had firmly gained a reputation for antagonising the youth at Man Utd.

From calling out Chido Obi and Harry Amass to missing the point on Toby Collyer, Amorim was a hard man to impress when it came to United’s youngsters.

That’s why it was so interesting when Amorim specifically named Thwaites as someone his squad will “have a place for” in the future.

That future never materialised because Amorim forced the board to sack him, but Thwaites proved Amorim right vs Palace U18s.

His progressive passing was a joy to behold, as he pulled the strings from the midfield and got United moving up the pitch.

The set-piece mastery first saw him go viral, but he has since added combativeness to his game, as well as press-resistance on the ball.

Amorim is not here anymore, but Thwaites is quickly showing that he should have a place in the senior squad, regardless of who the manager is.

Therein lies United’s dilemma.

Thwaites must not be sent on loan

Barring some extraordinary talent, youngsters often have to go through the baptism of loan spells in lower leagues to work their way to the senior team.

However, Thwaites has the kind of game that will scale better when he’s playing at a higher level and with better players.

He’s not the kind of player who should be forced to grunt away in the lower leagues to develop the other side of his game, because what he’s good at is exactly what top-level football craves in its midfielders.

He has the ball on a string, be it by passing or carrying, and his spatial awareness is already far beyond his age.

It won’t be an exaggeration to say that if he were Spanish, coming through the Barcelona academy, he’d have already made his first-team debut.

Not every midfielder needs to be an athletic monster who covers the ground. Thwaites has more than enough to hold his own with his brains, overpowering the brawns in the process.

That is the kind of player you build an elite midfield around, not someone you send to League Two to get tackled and chased.
