Harry Maguire faces eye-watering legal bill over 'cop assault' court case

The Manchester Utd star received a 21-month suspended sentence for assaulting a police officer in 2020 following an incident outside a bar on the island of Mykonos. But he immediately appealed the guilty verdict and is going to the supreme court.

England star Harry Maguire could face a legal bill of up to £100,000 as he fights to clear his name in Greece.

The 33-year-old Manchester United defender received a 21-month suspended sentence for assaulting a police officer in August, 2020 following an incident outside a bar on the island of Mykonos. But he immediately appealed the guilty verdict and has rejected multiple opportunities to settle the case.

Taking his appeal to the Supreme Court hearing could take another two years - eight years after the original incident. But he insists on his innocence and is prepared to take the case as far as he can - even with a mounting legal bill.

A source said: “The legal costs could hit £100,000. It could drag on for another two years and his legal team in Greece has received threats. But he will do everything it takes to clear his name." The defender was originally found guilty of repeated bodily harm, attempted bribery, violence against public employees and insult.

The verdict was upheld last month, and Maguire received a 15-month suspended sentence. But he can take his case to the Greek Supreme Court.

His brother Joe, 34, and pal Christopher Sharman, 35, were accused of brawling with rival fans and police outside a nightclub.

Joe Maguire and Sharman received a 13-month suspended sentence. All three denied the charges.

Standing before the judges last year, Harry's defence lawyer Alexis Anagnostakis, said: "It is impermissible that my client has been denied the fundamental right, as set out by Greek and EU law, to understand the case file in his own language."

When the judges agreed, they postponed the hearing, giving court-appointed interpreters six months to translate the case file.

Maguire's team argued that translating the original indictment was essential because the higher appeals court judges were hearing the case "from scratch."

It is understood that the star is ready to return to Greece for the Supreme Court hearing if his presence is required.

Maguire has agreed to stay at United for another year, with an option to extend until 2028. He reportedly agreed to take a pay cut from £190,000 to £120,000-a-week. He hopes to be included in Thomas Tuchel's England squad for this summer's World Cup.

His spokesman confirmed that he was appealing to the Greek Supreme Court but declined further comment.
