Mark Noble vindicated: Manager he tipped for West Ham pulls off 'incredible' achievement

West Ham United will be facing a very familiar face next season in the shape of Coventry City manager Frank Lampard, provided Nuno Espirito Santo secures another season of Premier League football that is.

Hammers News revealed six months ago that sporting director Mark Noble was still a big admirer of Lampard, despite his reputation being damaged by ill-fated stints in charge of Everton and Chelsea.

Flash forward to late-April. And, while Nuno Espirito Santo has succeeded in lifting West Ham United out of the bottom three, Frank Lampard’s promotion success at the helm of Coventry City is one in the eye for those who wrote him off so readily.

The Sky Blues ended their 25-year exile from the Premier League thanks to a late Bobby Thomas equaliser during Friday night’s 1-1 draw at Blackburn Rovers. Coventry, who were 17th when Lampard replaced the legendary Mark Robins in November 2024, have won 25 of their 43 games while scoring 85 goals along the way.

“Incredible moment,” a visibly emotional Lampard told reporters after the full time whistle at Ewood Park. “This is what it’s about. Coming here and getting a point at this stage isn’t easy. Doing this after 25 years… Wow. Wow.”

“I’m proud of myself and the staff. We came into a bit of an unknown 15 months ago when we arrived in a people carrier.

How many points are we getting then? 😬

Feel free to tell me where I'm going wrong 😂

“We’ve fallen in love and this is right up there with what I have achieved. I’m very proud to be the manager.”

Hammers News were informed, before Graham Potter’s sacking and Nuno Espirito Santo’s quickfire appointment, that Mark Noble had ‘pushed the case’ of potentially bringing Lampard back to East London.

Lampard will be back in his old ends next season now anyway, as long as the Hammers remain on the right side of the relegation line.
