Newcastle United were handed a major boost ahead of their clash with AFC Bournemouth at St James’ Park today.

After coming through a late fitness test, Bruno Guimaraes strode into the stadium at lunchtime as he looked to make his first appearance since picking up a hamstring injury away to Tottenham Hotspur in February.

The Brazilian international has missed 12 games with a muscle injury.

After spending one month in South America for treatment under the watch of the Brazilian Football Federation, he has been back on Tyneside for a month.

He suffered a further blow when coming down with mumps to delay his return and missed the game against Crystal Palace last weekend. But he was back for the encounter with the Cherries.

Howe had said yesterday: "We’ve seen him in training. He’s pushing really, really hard to be back involved.

" The medical team are trying to hold him back. I say hold him back but you know there’s always that tug because the player wants desperately to play."
