Everything you need to know about Harry Maguire's ban
Reason for the ban: Harry Maguire was sent off for a professional foul on Evanilson during a 2-2 draw against Bournemouth on March 20. However, the current suspension stems from a subsequent FA charge for improper conduct after he allegedly used abusive or insulting words toward the fourth official Matt Donohue while leaving the pitch.
Length of the suspension: The independent Regulatory Commission imposed an additional one-match suspension on top of his initial red card ban. This means he has been effectively sidelined for two games in total for the combined incidents, alongside receiving a £30,000 fine for his outburst.
Return to action: Having already served the first part of his suspension during the recent 2-1 defeat to Leeds United, the Chelsea game is the final match he must miss. He is due to return to the squad and be available for selection for United's next Premier League fixture against Brentford.
Maguire’s response: The defender chose to admit the charge of improper conduct rather than contesting the FA’s findings in a hearing. By admitting his guilt early, Maguire likely avoided a more severe multi-game penalty, though he expressed disappointment at missing such a vital period of the season.
Club statement: Manchester United released a brief statement confirming that the defender had accepted the sanctions and would not be appealing the decision. The club emphasised that the team remain fully focused ahead of their trip to London.
Defensive selection headaches: With Maguire suspended and Lisandro Martinez also banned following a red card against Leeds, Carrick faces a major selection dilemma. The manager may be forced to rely on youngster Ayden Heaven to fill the void against Chelsea.
Importance of the Chelsea fixture: This Saturday’s 8pm kick-off could be crucial to United’s hopes of securing a top-four finish and Champions League football. Sitting in third place, the team will want to bounce back from their recent setback against Leeds.
Wider context: A victory at Stamford Bridge would maintain their lead over the chasing pack, which includes Chelsea. However, a loss would significantly narrow the current seven-point gap between the two clubs.
