Eddie Howe has explained Anthony Gordon's absence from Newcastle United's 2-1 defeat against AFC Bournemouth.

A hip flexor injury could see Gordon miss next weekend's trip to Arsenal too, but Howe has now been hit by a fresh blow after Tino Livramento went off with a thigh problem.

When asked to explain Gordon's injury, Howe said: "He [Gordon] missed training on Thursday and Friday with a problem he picked up on Wednesday.

"So, we knew he wasn’t going to be ready. It was an injury.

"He went for a scan on Thursday morning, so we knew it was going to be an injury that was going to take him out of the game."

When probed on whether Gordon, linked with Bayern Munich, will be back for the trip to Arsenal, Howe said: "With Anthony, we are unclear. I don't think it is a long-term injury, whether he makes next week, we are not sure. We will have to see how he goes in training."

The game also ended with Tino Livramento limping off with a heavily strapped thigh with Howe admitting he has suffered "huge blow". With Livramento within touching distance of a World Cup squad place, he now faces assessment at Benton.

Howe stated: "For Tino we are not sure, it is a huge blow for him and for us. I actually thought he, in part with Kieran's introduction at the start of the second half, and losing him was a big blow."
