Ex-Barcelona star thinks Kylian Mbappe’s ‘selfishness’ is harming Real Madrid

Kylian Mbappe's impact has come under fire in recent months after the noticeable difference in Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid's fortunes ever since he swapped France for Spain in 2024.

His first season at the Santiago Bernabeu saw the Frenchman plunder more than 40 goals in all competitions, and he's already hit that number again in the 2025-26 campaign. However, the Spanish giants have only won the UEFA Super Cup since his arrival.

PSG, on the other hand, won their first-ever Champions League title in the first Mbappe-less campaign at Parc des Princes. Luis Enrique's side started to look like a formidable team as soon as the likes of Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi were moved on.

Mbappe's goal at the Allianz Arena wasn't enough to stop Los Blancos from crashing out of European competition at the hands of Bayern Munich. Now, despite his goalscoring exploits, the 27-year-old has been accused of bringing 'selfishness' into the Real Madrid dressing room.

Former France international Emmanuel Petit has called out his compatriot. The ex-Arsenal and Chelsea midfielder, who won the 1998 World Cup with Les Bleus, did admit that everything wasn't Mbappe's fault, but labelled his introduction 'a fiasco' (per Mail Sport):

"It's not solely Mbappe's fault. But his arrival filled the Real Madrid dressing room with selfishness. It's a fiasco."

Pointing towards PSG's upturn in fortunes, Petit added: "The timing really works against him. Since PSG have been playing like a team, they have been phenomenal. They are all united, like the fingers of a hand."

This isn't the first time the retired France international has taken aim at the Real Madrid striker. Petit labelled Mbappe an attention-seeker and said he wasn't fit to captain his country after the Euro 2024 defeat against Spain.

While quick to take aim at Mbappe, the midfielder-turned-pundit believes the finger of blame should be pointing at another Los Blancos star when it comes to this season's Champions League failure. That man is Eduardo Camavinga, who was shown two yellow cards in the Munich clash.

What Florentino Perez Said to Real Madrid Players in Dressing Room After Bayern Loss

Perez felt the need to address the club's players after their controversial Champions League exit to Bayern Munich.

The tie was level until Camavinga was given his marching orders and Bayern took full advantage to score two late goals and seal their place in the last four. Petit said:

"If anyone needs to be blamed, it's Camavinga. His foul was catastrophic.

"At that point in the game (the 86th minute), the red card was very harsh, but unfortunately, the referee (Slavko Vincic) was simply applying the rules. Real always hide behind the referee's performance."
