IT WOULD be churlish not to appreciate the quality of Xavi Simons’ 78th minute goal that put relegation rivals Tottenham ahead against Brighton this evening: It was a curling right foot shot that cannoned in off the post to steer Tottenham towards their first win of this calendar year and heave them back above West Ham and out of the drop zone.
Briefly.
For long periods it seemed the game would end in 1 a 1-1 stalemate which would have kept the Hammers in 17th spot but then Simons put Spurs ahead and briefly West Ham were back in the drop zone:
As it stood in the 77th minute: – Hammers back in 18th
But Tottenham being Tottenham, they simply couldn’t hold onto a lead and Brighton equalised in the 95th minute, dropping Spurs back into the relegation zone, now one point behind West Ham . With more turns than a Snake slalom, this Premier League relegation battle took another twist as Tottenham’s lead was cancelled out : I was punching the air as if West Ham had just won a cup tie and Tottenham STILL haven’t won a Premier League game this year. Wonderful.
