Tottenham dropped two points against Brighton in dramatic Premier League clash.
Tottenham showed genuine signs of progress under Roberto De Zerbi but were left frustrated after surrendering their lead twice in a 2-2 draw against Brighton at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. Xavi Simons was brilliant throughout, but Kevin Danso’s costly error gifted the Seagulls a late equaliser that denied Spurs what would have been a crucial three points in their battle for survival. The result leaves Tottenham still in the relegation zone with five games remaining.
Tottenham Hotspur Player Ratings
Antonin Kinsky (6/10): Continued his improvement from the Sunderland display, commanding his area with authority and making some solid saves throughout. Could do little about either Brighton goal and is growing in confidence with each passing game under De Zerbi.
Pedro Porro (7/10): Capped a strong performance with a well-taken header from Simons’ superb delivery to give Tottenham the lead in the first half. Brought his usual attacking energy and was one of the more consistently positive performers across the full 90 minutes.
Kevin Danso (4/10): The villain of the piece. His costly error in the closing stages gifted Brighton the opportunity to equalise for the second time, undoing the excellent work Simons and Bergvall had produced to restore Tottenham’s advantage. In a match of such significance, individual mistakes of that nature are simply unforgivable.
Micky van de Ven (5/10): Showed continued signs of returning to something approaching his best level, defending with more composure and intelligence than has been evident for much of this nightmarish season. Danso’s error took the spotlight but Van de Ven’s own contribution was largely solid.
Destiny Udogie (5/10): Worked diligently on the left and contributed defensively within De Zerbi’s structure before being replaced by Spence in the 77th minute. A decent enough display without ever truly imposing himself on the game in an attacking sense.
Yves Bissouma (5/10): Showed reasonable energy and discipline in the midfield before being replaced by Gray in the 58th minute. Worked hard to protect the backline and contributed to the improved defensive structure De Zerbi has been implementing since his arrival. However, he was booked in the first half for a silly ‘take-one-for-the-team’ challenge.
Rodrigo Bentancur (5/10): A competent performance before being replaced by Palhinha in the 68th minute. Brought composure in possession and helped Tottenham retain the ball in the middle of the park during his time on the pitch, which was a marked improvement on some of the more chaotic midfield displays earlier in the season.
Conor Gallagher (5/10): Showed more of the pressing intensity De Zerbi demands and contributed defensively before being replaced by Bergvall in the 77th minute. Still not at the level that defines his best football, but the effort and commitment were not in question.
Randal Kolo Muani (5/10): Worked tirelessly as he invariably does, linking play and pressing with purpose before being replaced by Tel in the 58th minute. Did not find the decisive moment the game required but his contribution to the team’s overall structure was valuable.
Xavi Simons (8/10): The undisputed star of the afternoon and the one player who genuinely looked capable of winning the game single-handedly. His delivery for Porro’s first-half header was inch-perfect, and his second-half strike from outside the box, after Bergvall had brilliantly stolen possession, was a moment of genuine world-class quality. On a day when Tottenham needed someone to step up, Simons delivered repeatedly and emphatically.
Dominic Solanke (5/10): Battled hard against a well-organised Brighton backline and held the ball up with reasonable effectiveness. Was unable to add the decisive contribution that the game demanded but worked selflessly throughout in the role De Zerbi has asked of him.
Substitutes
Archie Gray (6/10): Brought his familiar energy and intelligence after coming on in the 58th minute, contributing to the improved midfield structure that helped Tottenham retake the lead.
Mathys Tel (5/10): Introduced in the 58th minute and brought directness and pace that caused Brighton some problems, without ever finding the decisive moment to put the game beyond reach.
Lucas Bergvall (7/10): Made an immediate and decisive impact after coming on in the 77th minute, brilliantly stealing possession from Brighton to set up Simons’ stunning equaliser. A substitute appearance that demonstrated exactly the quality and mentality De Zerbi will want to build around going forward.
Joao Palhinha (5/10): Provided defensive solidity after replacing Bentancur in the 68th minute. Did his job without drawing particular attention to himself in either direction.
Djed Spence (N/A): Introduced in the 77th minute with insufficient time to make a meaningful contribution.
