CHELSEA 0-1 MAN UTD: A strike from Matheus Cunha was all that separated the sides at Stamford Bridge in a game which had significant implications in the race for Champions League football

Manchester United have taken a massive step towards securing Champions League football after their hard-fought 1-0 win against Chelsea. The Red Devils claimed all three points at Stamford Bridge courtesy of Matheus Cunha's first-half goal.

It was nervy for Michael Carrick's side, who had to fend off wave after wave of Chelsea attack, as the hosts searched for a response to ease the rising pressure on Liam Rosenior. But United held on to strengthen their grip on third place.

Carrick's men came into the clash dealing with a crisis in defence, but ended up coming away with their first clean sheet in nearly two months. Chelsea, meanwhile, still haven't found their shooting boots.

Here are five talking points from Stamford Bridge.

1. Mazraoui the makeshift

Crisis? What crisis? Noussair Mazraoui was deployed as a makeshift centre-back by Carrick, who faced a crisis in defence pre-match. Four central defenders were missing after Leny Yoro picked up an injury in training and joined Matthijs de Ligt, Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez on the sidelines.

But Mazraoui performed admirably next to 19-year-old Ayden Heaven in a position he'd never played before at United. It's another strong to the Moroccan's bow and his versatility could be key to his long-term future with the Red Devils.

3. Estevao's early bath

Regarded as one of the sport's most talented teenagers, it feels like we're yet to see the best of Estevao on a consistent basis. And we'll have to wait even longer after the 18-year-old came off injured.

Probing at United's defence inside opening quarter of an hour, Estevao burst into the box and fired a scuffed attempt at goal which was gathered by Senne Lammens. But the winger appeared to hurt himself in the process and had to be replaced by Alejandro Garnacho, who entered the fray against his former club for the first time since his £40million departure.

3. How may I assist you?

Watch out, Thierry Henry and Kevin De Bruyne, Bruno Fernandes is coming for your record. In setting up Cunha, the United captain registered his 18th assist of the season.

Fernandes burst past ex-team-mate Garnacho on the right and played an inviting ball across the box for Cunha to smash home. The midfielder now only needs three more assists to break the all-time Premier League record. With five games left, who'd bet against him?

4. Toothless Chelsea

It's now 296 minutes and counting since Chelsea last scored a goal in the Premier League. After hitting four against Aston Villa in early March, the Blues haver been toothless in front of goal.

Liam Delap got the nod in the absence of Joao Pedro here, and while he came close by hitting the bar in the second half, he couldn't end Chelsea's drought. Conceding goals is certainly a problem for Rosenior to address, but his side's failure to score them is arguably more concerning.

5. United go 10 clear

What a turnaround it's been from United. The Red Devils now have a huge buffer to sixth-placed Chelsea and are firmly on course to qualify for the Champions League.

Such a feat is likely to earn Carrick the job on a permanent basis, and although it wasn't always pretty in West London, his patched-up defence held on and got the job done.
