Why Arsenal have received a warning?

As per reports, Arsenal and their manager Mikel Arteta have received a warning from UEFA. They had a face-off against Sporting in UCL quarter final which they won on aggregate score. The UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body have communicated with the Gunners. An official and written warning has been sent to the English team after they were found to make a late kick-off breach in the quarter-final.

UEFA has concluded with a verdict after checking all the evidences. It explains that Arsenal were not prepared to begin the match as soon as the referee blew the whistle. This is how the London club had broken the tournament’s timing regulations.

No financial penalty has been implied on Arsenal this time. A monetary fine is imposed only when the limit has been crossed on that occasion. Still a warning has been given to the team and it’s manager. Therefore, Arsenal is now serving a notice period after violating the rules of scheduled kick-off. It has been clearly informed that UEFA will anticipate that the Gunners will be strict from now on. The club’s routine will be strictly scheduled. All the formalities involved from the dressing room to coming out of the tunnel should be completed on time.

This initiative has been taken to restrict the teams from starting games late. A delay in kick-off could hamper strictly controlled broadcast timings. Commercial windows associated with the broadcasting rights of the competition may get affected.

What kind of treatment did Real Madrid recieve from UEFA?

A monetary fine of €20,000 was imposed on Real Madrid in their first leg of UCL quarter final against Bayern Munich. This penalty was given to the Spanish club for starting the football game late from the scheduled time. Before this, the Los Blancos and Portuguese team, Benfica were fined about €40,000. This punishment was given for the similar type of violation in the league phase match at Estádio da Luz.

In both the cases, UEFA warned the managers of both of the teams. Theu also highlighted that repetition of the same action may affect individuals. Punishments can be sanctioned personally for such actions. In some instances, hard financial penalty can be implied.

Are rules really different for some clubs?

It has been evident that Arsenal and Real Madrid have been punished differently. Although both of the clubs have committed the same mistake. But there is a catch. The English side has done this deed for the very first time. So, a lenient approach has been taken towards them. Arsenal are already in a bit difficult situation now. They have lost the Carabao Cup final to Man City and are out of the FA Cup. Their EPL title charge is also under threat as Man City have reduced the point gap in the league table.

Whereas the Spanish team has done this for multiple times in the same calendar year. Therefore a strict decision has been taken for them. Real Madrid are now out of the Champions League after getting beaten by Bayern in both the quarter final legs.

Financial penalties serve as a setback for every club in their planned finances for that year. But punishments are given to rectify and become alert. This is also a part of the game.
