The €50m star is expected to leave Tottenham at the end of the season.
Tottenham Hotspur skipper Cristian Romero’s season is over after he suffered a knee injury in the 1-0 defeat at Sunderland last weekend. He is expected to miss a minimum of six weeks of action after colliding with Antonin Kinsky, injuring his knee in the process. Luckily, the central defender has not suffered a torn collateral ligament and will not require surgery, which would have put his participation at the World Cup in jeopardy.
Ahead of Roberto De Zerbi‘s first full season in charge, Tottenham have already decided on the future of Cristian Romero. The North Londoners are reportedly set to cash in on the Argentina international this summer, even if they manage to preserve their top-flight status. If that is the case, then the Spurs captain has already played his last game for the club.
Atletico Madrid have been keen on signing Romero since last year. A move didn’t happen in 2025, but Atletico Madrid have revived their interest and are planning to make a €50 million offer for the 2022 World Cup winner when the transfer window reopens. However, the La Liga side could face competition from a Premier League club for Romero’s services.
Newcastle United make shock move to sign Cristian Romero
According to an exclusive report from SportsBoom, Newcastle United have made a shock enquiry for the €50m Romero, following claims of a clause in his contract. Should Tottenham drop into the Championship, there is a clause in the centre-back’s contract that would allow him to leave the club for free. Such a clause has put several clubs on red alert over his potential availability on a free transfer, including Newcastle United.
It seems extremely unlikely Spurs would have included anything like this when they agreed on a new contract with him in August 2025, especially off the back of the Europa League success. Nonetheless, Newcastle’s interest isn’t surprising, with Fabian Schar now 34 and expected to be released at the end of the season upon the expiry of his contract. Romero would be a terrific option to replace the veteran Schar at the heart of the Magpies’ defence and add some valuable top-level experience and leadership skills, which they’ve lacked this season.
The Toon Army won’t have a straightforward route if they do firm up their initial interest, though, with Premier League rivals Manchester United and Crystal Palace having also made tentative checks on the player’s situation at White Hart Lane.

Tottenham in advanced talks to sign Marcos Senesi
As per reputable journalist David Ornstein, Tottenham are in advanced talks to sign Marcos Senesi on a potential free transfer from Bournemouth in the summer. A move would be contingent on Spurs staying in the Premier League, with Senesi not willing to join a team that will be playing Championship football.
The 28-year-old is an experienced Premier League defender who is approaching the end of his fourth year at Bournemouth. The South American is seeking a new challenge, and while there are several clubs ready to provide him with that, he is tilted towards joining Roberto De Zerbi’s side. But for Spurs to clinch Senesi’s signature, they must stave off the unthinkable threat of relegation.
