Hull City have been hit by another major injury blow with the news that Manchester United loanee Toby Collyer is out for the rest of the regular season.

As revealed by Hull Live on Saturday, Collyer picked up an ankle injury in training that will see him sidelined for another three weeks, meaning he would only have a faint chance of returning this season should City secure a play-off place and then progress to the Wembley final in late May.

He suffered a twisted ankle in training after colliding with goalkeeper Dillon Phillips, and will now return to Manchester United for treatment this week.

The setback comes after Collyer made an impressive full debut for City in the 0-0 draw against Coventry City earlier this month, in what was his first start since arriving from Old Trafford in January.

Despite suggesting he would be fit to go again at Sheffield United last Saturday, the midfielder was absent from the Bramall Lane squad and suffered the injury in the build-up to the 1-1 draw against Birmingham City on Saturday.

Since arriving at the MKM Stadium, Collyer had been restricted to just four appearances off the bench before making his full debut against the Sky Blues, who sealed promotion back to the Premier League on Friday night.

Injuries have hampered the talented 22-year-old all season, with his loan spell at West Brom in the first half of the campaign hit by calf trouble, and he’s had hamstring issues since arriving in East Yorkshire, which have limited his minutes.

While losing Collyer is a blow, City will at least welcome back John Lundstram for Tuesday night’s trip to struggling Leicester City after he served a one-match ban on Saturday.

Regan Slater could also return next weekend at Charlton Athletic as he battles back from an ankle injury, though he might yet return at the King Power Stadium on Tuesday night.

Eliot Matazo was back on the bench, but given the state of the game, after 14 months out, the situation didn't lend itself to him coming on, while Darko Gyabi didn't make the squad as he continues his comeback.

"Unfortunately, we have a lot of problems in our team selections because we lost to Toby Collyer in training," boss Sergej Jakirovic told Hull Live. "He now has a protective boot, and for him, the season is over. All this season has been very unlucky for him; this is unbelievable. Dillon (Phillips) made a save and then fell on his ankle. Unbelievable."

Jakirovic sent on Ryan Giles and Yu Hirakawa in the closing stages after they'd missed the last 10 and 11 games respectively, while Matazo, along with Akin Famewo, who hasn't played since the defeat at Ipswich Town, remained on the bench. Jakirovic, though, admits he's stuck between needing to give them time and the desperation for points to clinch a top-six finish.

"We also have some players who are coming back from injury, but in my opinion, they are too far away from everything (to start games), but on the other hand, we don't have any other options, so we have to use them."
