Bruno Guimaraes returned from injury but couldn’t prevent Newcastle United from losing to AFC Bournemouth.
Bruno Guimaraes revealed mixed emotions following Newcastle United’s 2-1 defeat to AFC Bournemouth at St James’ Park.
Newcastle’s captain marked his return from 10 weeks out with a hamstring injury by coming on as a second-half substitute.
Within minutes of his introduction, the Brazilian looked to have played a key role in drawing the Magpies level, as Will Osula raced in behind to score.
Osula was flagged offside and although he was narrowly ahead of the opposition defence, the equaliser stood as the replays showed Bournemouth striker Evanilson got the assist - not Guimaraes.
Nevertheless, it was Guimaraes’ urgency to turn and play forward that forced the challenge from Evanilson as the ball ultimately ended up running through to Osula.
But it ended up counting for nothing. After Marcus Tavernier put the Cherries in front in the first-half, Adrien Truffert restored their lead in the 85th minute, as Eddie Howe’s side suffered a fourth defeat in a row in all competitions.
Newcastle sit 14th in the Premier League table and, with five matches left to play, have all but given up hope of qualifying for Europe.
Bruno Guimaraes has mixed emotions after Newcastle United injury comeback
With pressure continuing to mount on manager Howe, Guimaraes admitted that the current situation is the toughest period he’s experienced since joining the club from Lyon in January 2022.
“So many emotions right now! I’m happy to be back after almost 10 weeks,” Guimaraes wrote on Instagram. “I want to thank everyone who was part of my recovery, without exception. I went through one of the most difficult moments of my career, but by the grace of God, I’m back and ready to go again.
“I’m sad about the moment we are currently going through at the club. I think that, for the first time in almost five years that we’ve been together, this has been the toughest period. The only way to get through a moment like this is to keep quiet and work even harder.
“I want to thank everyone for the messages of support during these 10 weeks. Without a doubt, your encouragement was essential in giving me the strength to recover as quickly as possible 🖤🤍3️⃣9️⃣”
