Sunderland youngsters Isaac Allan and Jake Waters impressed during Hebburn Town’s win at Bamber Bridge on Saturday.
Sunderland academy duo Isaac Allan and Jake Waters have been praised for their role in helping loan club Hebburn Town move to within three points of securing a shock Northern Premier League title win and a historic promotion into the National League North.
The young duo have spent the last two months on loan at the Trustmark Group Stadium as Daniel Moore’s side look to put the seal on what has been an unexpected push for the league title and both Allan and Waters have played their part in helping the Hornets move to the brink of a stunning achievement. They negotiated a tough-looking visit to Bamber Bridge on Saturday afternoon as Allan made a number of eye-catching saves and Waters produced a hardworking performance after being introduced as a half-time substitute to help guide their side to a 2-1 win.

That means Hebburn will be crowned as champions of the Northern Premier League’s Premier Division if they can claim a home win against Rushall Olympic next Saturday afternoon in what will be their final game of a quite remarkable season. Hornets boss Moore reflected on a hard-earned win against Bamber Bridge and praised both Allan and Waters for the impact they made at the SFC Stadium.
He said: “I’ve just said in there, first of all, Isaac, the goalkeeper, made two or three unbelievable saves where he has come off his line and made himself big. He kept us in the game if I’m being brutally honest. That’s the way it went. The subs changed the game. We felt we needed a bit more pressure up front with Gaz so we went for it basically. We stuck two up front because we knew we had to win, as we have done all season, we haven’t come to any game to try and draw. This was no different. Obviously, there is a lot at stake but that’s not changed throughout the season so it’s something we thought about at half-time. Jake got a good run-out, he put an absolute shift in.”

Although Hebburn lead the division thanks to a superior goal difference to Hednesford Town, FC United of Manchester also remain in the title picture and they can move to within two points of the top two with a home win in a rearranged fixture against Stockton Town on Tuesday night. However, Moore is keen for Hebburn to focus on their own preparations for Saturday’s season-ending game with Rushall and stressed nothing will change over the coming days.
He said: “We have got to be focused on what we are doing and what we have been doing all season. It won’t change, training won’t change, we won’t do anything different. The players, I’ve said to them, they’ve put themselves in an unbelievable position and it will never happen again. It happened the other year in the East Division, but not in this division. We’ve gone toe-to-toe with some outstanding clubs throughout this season and the players have put themselves in a position where they can win the league so hats of to them for that.”
