Roberto De Zerbi's reaction to Tottenham collapse is exactly why Man Utd were right to avoid him

Manchester United were linked with Roberto De Zerbi as a head coach candidate before he ended up joining Tottenham.

Under Ineos, Roberto De Zerbi was interviewed for the Manchester United job as a potential replacement for Erik ten Hag.

When Ruben Amorim was sacked earlier this season, De Zerbi was again linked with United while he was in charge of Marseille.

De Zerbi reached out to United before accepting the Tottenham job this season, but Ineos clearly didn’t consider him for the job. His start in North London suggests United made the right decision.

Roberto De Zerbi praises Tottenham despite collapse

A late equaliser saw Tottenham draw 2-2 with Brighton in the Premier League, meaning Roberto De Zerbi is still yet to win a match since his appointment. Spurs are also stuck in the relegation zone with just five matches remaining.

Despite Tottenham being on track to drop into the Championship, De Zerbi chose to repeatedly praise the performance against Brighton.

“We played a good game. Brighton is a very good team. In this moment, they are playing very well,” De Zerbi said.

“I think we deserve to win the game, especially if you consider we conceded a goal in extra time when losing one ball in our possession. But anyway, I’m very proud for the performance of my players.

“I always thought and believed in the quality of the players. They played a good game,

“They have to follow me and not think and listen to me. They have to listen to me. I am proud of their performance.”

Michael Carrick showed better mentality than Roberto De Zerbi

At a time when Tottenham need revolution, De Zerbi is sleepwalking towards relegation and accepting a point in a crucial home match.

Earlier this season, Michael Carrick expressed severe disappointment at United drawing 1-1 with West Ham away from home.

It shows a contrast in mentality. Last season, United and Tottenham were in very similar positions, but this season the Red Devils have ascended back to the Champions League and Carrick’s mentality shows why.

Carrick said he was “happy” that United were disappointed after dropping points to West Ham. United then went and beat Everton and Crystal Palace back-to-back as a response.

United have been heavily linked with De Zerbi in the past, but the Red Devils need an obsessive winner and that is where Carrick has the edge.
