Coventry MPs including Zarah Sultana hail the Sky Blues as 'fearless'

Coventry MPs have applauded the Sky Blues for reaching the Premier League. Success in a historic campaign has earned them praise from across the political spectrum and beyond.

Coventry City secured its place in the Premier League after a thrilling Sky Bet Championship, sealed by a 1-1 draw at Blackburn. Bobby Thomas' late equaliser proved crucial, ending a 25-year absence from the top flight.

Mary Creagh CBE, Labour MP for Coventry East, said she has supported the Sky Blues for many years and vividly remembers the 1987 FA Cup. She also commended Doug King, Frank Lampard, and Mark Robins.

Labour MP Taiwo Owatemi said she has enjoyed attending matches and that the Sky Blues' Premier League status will deliver a major boost to Coventry. Your Party MP, Zarah Sultana, said what they have achieved is 'nothing short of extraordinary.'

Speaking to CoventryLive, Taiwo said: “Coventry is a one-club city, and after everything this club has been through, losing its home, playing away from the city, and falling just short in recent years, this just feels right. To be back in the Premier League again is a credit to everyone who stuck with it, especially the fans who backed the team every step of the way.

“Being at the Derby game and hearing the roar when Jack Rudoni made it 3-2, that was football! You could feel what it meant.

“Getting back to the Premier League is going to lift the whole city. Bigger games, bigger days, and that buzz around Coventry that only football can bring.”

Mary said: “Coventry City FC has been a symbol of our great city since it started life in the Singer Cycle Factory in the 1880s and has always been close to the hearts of local people. As a lifelong supporter of the Sky Blues, I remember the joy in the city when we won the FA Cup in 1987.

“Coventry is buzzing again as we prepare to take our rightful place back in the Premier League for the first time in 25 years. It is going to be a huge boost for the city.

“I would like to pay tribute to the vision of owner Doug King and coach Frank Lampard and, before him, Mark Robins, and the club directors and staff and, of course, the brilliant players who are leading us to this new golden era.”

Zarah also hailed the Sky Blues' major success, saying: “What Coventry City have achieved this season is nothing short of extraordinary. Frank Lampard has built something truly special, a fearless, attacking side that has been a class above everyone else this season.

“But this moment belongs to the people of this city. Coventry fans stuck with the club through some really dark times, and that loyalty deserves to be rewarded. It is not just a football story but one about a community that never gave up on its club.”
