Bruno Guimaraes returned to action in Newcastle United’s 2-1 loss to Bournemouth on Saturday.

Bruno Guimaraes congratulated Matheus Cunha after his goal earned Manchester United a 1-0 win over Chelsea.

The Brazilian duo had contrasting fortunes on an entertaining day of Premier League action. While Guimaraes returned from a two-month absence, he could not evoke his inner saviour to rescue Newcastle United again.

The Magpies lost their fourth consecutive clash across all competitions with a 2-1 defeat to Bournemouth. As for Cunha, his strike was enough for Man United to claim three points at Stamford Bridge.

Bruno Guimaraes addresses Newcastle United supporters

It was a day of mixed emotions for Guimaraes. Happy to make his long-awaited return, as skipper, he also admitted Newcastle are in a slump.

“So many emotions right now!” Guimaraes told supporters on Instagram. “I’m happy to be back after almost 10 weeks. I want to thank everyone who was part of my recovery, without exception. I went through one of the most difficult moments of my career, but by the grace of God, I’m back and ready to go again.

“I’m sad about the moment we are currently going through at the club. I think that, for the first time in almost five years that we’ve been together, this has been the toughest period. The only way to get through a moment like this is to keep quiet and work even harder.

“I want to thank everyone for the messages of support during these 10 weeks. Without a doubt, your encouragement was essential in giving me the strength to recover as quickly as possible.”
