Mark Clattenburg calls for Pgmol action and says Man Utd can feel 'aggrieved' by hair-pulling controversy

Manchester United can now feel even more frustrated by the decision to send off Lisandro Martinez against Leeds United.

In Manchester United’s 2-1 defeat to Leeds United, the Red Devils went down to 10 men in the second half when Lisandro Martinez was sent off for pulling hair in a duel against Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Even Calvert-Lewin said Martinez was “unlucky” to receive a red card for the incident.

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg defended the Martinez red card decision, but a new Premier League incident has him calling for PGMOL action.

Mark Clattenburg questions hair-pulling laws

Just days after the Lisandro Martinez incident, which resulted in a red card and a three-match suspension, there was another hair pull spotted in the Premier League.

Fulham’s Calvin Bassey had his hair pulled during Fulham’s 0-0 draw with Brentford but the incident went unpunished.

Mark Clattenburg exclusively told United in Focus: “Manchester United and Lisandro Martinez can feel aggrieved after another inconsistent referee decision regarding hair pulling.

“We saw this weekend where Calvin Bassey of Fulham had his hair pulled and nothing happened. Meanwhile, we have seen some instances of hair pulling being punished as a red card.

“The PGMOL need to clarify this, and I am sure Howard Webb – the head of refereeing – will do so on his program on Sky Sports.

“At the moment, the understanding of the law regarding hair pulling is a red card and a minimum of three matches.”

Paul Tierney sent off Martinez but ignored other hair pull

It was Premier League referee Paul Tierney who sent off Martinez against Leeds, and he was also in charge for the Fulham vs Brentford clash.

While Martinez was sent to the dressing room, Dango Ouattara’s hair pull on Bassey wasn’t even punished.

Carrick slammed the Martinez decision as “shocking” and United can feel even more frustrated now that the same rule hasn’t been applied just a few days later.

Several refereeing decisions have not gone United’s way this season, and this will only add to the anger and frustration that fans feel.
