Tottenham plot shock move for 35-year-old Leeds goalkeeper with over 60 PL appearances

Tottenham are set to invest in a new goalkeeper this summer.

Guglielmo Vicario’s three-year spell in North London is expected to come to an end this summer, with the Tottenham Hotspur No.1 having held talks with Inter Milan regarding a summer transfer. In fact, he has reportedly agreed to join Inter Milan on a four-year deal worth €3 million per season.

Vicario has been Tottenham’s first-choice goalkeeper for three seasons, but after failing to live up to the lofty expectations of the fanbase and provide stability to the side, it appears all parties have accepted that the time has come to part ways. The Italy international, who is currently sidelined following a hernia surgery, has been keen on a return to his homeland for months now.

In the wake of his potential departure, Spurs have identified Manchester City’s James Trafford as their next No.1. It has been widely reported that Tottenham could face competition from London rivals Chelsea for Trafford’s signature.

This means that it will not be straightforward for Tottenham to sign the 23-year-old shot-stopper, who has had to act as a deputy to Gianluigi Donnarumma at Man City this season. As a result, the Lilywhites are also lining up alternative targets to Trafford.

Tottenham eye shock move for Leeds United goalkeeper

According to a report from The Telegraph, Tottenham are planning to sign Leeds United goalkeeper Karl Darlow. They are tracking the 35-year-old as the North Londoners look to sign ‘at least one new goalkeeper’. The shot-stopper will be available for free if he doesn’t sign a contract extension with the Whites.

Karl Darlow moved to Leeds United from Newcastle United in 2023. The Welshman started the season on the bench, but after summer signing Lucas Perri’s underwhelming displays, Darlow has been Leeds’ main man in goal for the last few months.

The veteran custodian has started the Whites’ last 11 Premier League games, playing a crucial role in their improved form. He helped Leeds register a historic 2-1 win over bitter rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford earlier this week.

At 35, Darlow cannot be deemed a long-term solution to Tottenham’s goalkeeping conundrum. He has valuable Premier League experience under his belt, which could come in handy if Spurs sign him. However, he cannot be the club’s No.1 next season. The only logic behind his signing will be if the N17 officials view the ex-Newcastle United man as a deputy to potential No.1, Trafford.

And also for that to happen, Spurs will have to either send Antonin Kinsky on loan or move him on permanently in the summer. That said, it remains to be seen whether Tottenham can secure Darlow’s services on a free transfer from Leeds.
