Zian Flemming came Burnley a surprise lead on the stroke of half-time, but Scott Parker’s side capitulated as soon as Morgan Gibbs-White equalised just after the hour mark.

Fifteen minutes later, Gibbs-White had completed his hat-trick, while Igor Jesus added a fourth with the last action of the game.

While Pereira admits his side were far from their best following their midweek Europa League exploits, he praised their character and application to fight back.

“It's not easy to play two days and a half after you're facing a strong team like Porto and come again with the stress of the results,” he said.

“That's why I prefer not to see the opponents in the battle. I prefer not to see it because I suffer with my team.

“I cannot suffer with the other teams. I say to them: ‘we are in the command of our life because we don't need to look for the opponents. We don't need to look because we are in a position that we can, we just depend on us. Go there and prove again your qualities. Prove again, forget the fatigue, forget everything’.

“But in the end, the reality was difficult. The first half was difficult. It was difficult because we didn't find the proper spaces. The pace with the ball was not the pace to create problems and they were very comfortable. The opponents were very comfortable in the game.

“We didn't create a chance to score and in the end of the first half, they scored a goal from nothing.

“Half time, everything changed. Everything changed with the conversation. Trying to help them to find the spaces. Trying to look for different spaces and just saying to them: ‘even if we are losing 3-0, I believe that you and our supporters can do it. We are just losing 1-0 and we just need to score two goals and if we score two goals, we win the game’ and they scored four.

“I'm very happy. Because the supporters deserve a lot and the players, the team, the club, this win was important.

“The next one is the most important, because it's the next one that we have a chance to get points again.”
