Tottenham suffered a late 2-2 draw against Brighton.
The Lilywhites’ hopes of staying in the Premier League continue to become slimmer by the day and more so after Tottenham went on to draw (FT 2-2) against Brighton this weekend. And that shared points with the Seagulls has got Spurs’ chances of getting relegated going up to over 50%. According to Opta’s supercomputer, Tottenham have a 54.22% chance they’ll go down, and that probability number has gone up from 46.50%, which was before that kickoff.
Danso mistake that could cost Tottenham
Georginio Rutter kept his goal till late as he scored that equaliser in the 95th minute, which meant Tottenham didn’t get their first league win of 2026. But beyond that winless run, this also comes as a big blow for Spurs, as it will make it tougher for Roberto De Zerbi & Co. to stay in the Premier League.
Tottenham had been ahead until the last minutes of the game, and that was thanks to what was an amazing long-distance shot by Xavi Simons. It was enough to get the fans excited. But then Kevin Danso (who was filling in for the injured Cristian Romero) made a mistake which ended up costing Tottenham that win.
The Austrian defender tried to control a cross from Yankuba Minteh instead of just kicking it away, and Jean Paul van Hecke took the ball away from him inside the Tottenham box. Van Hecke was quick to pounce on that moment as he passed it to Rutter, who powered it beyond Kinsky for the equaliser.
And that decision to try to control the ball instead of clearing it will probably stay with Danso and the team for a long time (and ideally even Tottenham fans given how it could affect the rest of the season at Hotspur Way).
Roberto De Zerbi has five games to save them, the Tottenham relegation run-in
De Zerbi & Co now have a tough mountain to climb with only five games remaining this season. And it starts with a trip to Wolves next weekend. Wolves are currently at the bottom of the Premier League and pretty much out of the running to survive, and let’s be honest, this game might be Spurs’ best chance to break their winless streak.
After that, Spurs will go to Aston Villa before hosting what looks like a strong Leeds United team at home. After Leeds, De Zerbi will visit Chelsea’s Stamford Bridge before wrapping up their season against Everton on the road.
