He lost the ball every 2 touches: 3/10 Arsenal star is becoming their worst signing since Pepe…

And with that, Arsenal's title hopes may have just evaporated. It might be a perplexing statement to make, considering the Gunners are still top of the Premier League but their defeat to Manchester City on Sunday feels fatal.

Truth be told, if Mikel Arteta's men do lose the title, then they will have last week's defeat to Bournemouth to blame or that ridiculous 2-2 draw with Wolves.

Win those games and the result against City on Sunday probably would have been redundant. However, Arsenal never do things the easy way. After their 2-1 loss at the Etihad, the gap between them and Pep Guardiola's side is three points.

Should the Citizens win in midweek against Burnley, as they are expected to do so, Arsenal will relinquish their grasp on top spot. In all honesty, it already feels like City's title to lose.

What has gone wrong for Arsenal in the Premier League title race

Just over a week ago, Arsenal were nine points clear at the top of the table. A month ago, the Gunners were still in with a chance of winning the quadruple.

Well, fast forward a few weeks and the Gunners look as though they could genuinely end the campaign without a trophy.

Some would go as far as to call it a complete capitulation. They have lost their last four games on the domestic scene and their only win since losing the Carabao Cup final was against Sporting.

It said it all in midweek that despite reaching a Champions League semi-final, there was still tension inside the Emirates Stadium. There was not much of a celebration. The post-match chatter was about frustration. On that evidence, was it really any surprise that Arsenal lost against City at the weekend? The next time Arteta's men visit the Emirates Stadium, you will be able to cut the tension with a knife.

So, what's going wrong? It's safe to say it boils down to their attacking play. Cast your mind back to the 2022/23 season and you will remember fast transitions, creativity and goals.

Gabriel Martinelli, Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard all scored 15 goals apiece. So, what's happened to the forward line of old?

Odegaard-Arsenal

Well, a mix of injuries and the tactics which appear to have sucked the life out of this Arsenal side by Arteta. The Spaniard prioritises control and it's come at the expense of freedom and creativity in attack. To his credit, he did try and change that at City by fielding Eberechi Eze and Odegaard in the starting lineup together for just the fourth time this season.

However, for much of recent weeks and indeed recent months, the football on display has been turgid. It's lacked pace and it's lacked a sense of urgency.

In their last six matches, they have scored just four times which just about sums up the regression in the last three years.

At the centre of their woes has been the wide areas.

Arsenal's wingers struggle again against Man City

Gabriel Martinelli has just one Premier League goal all season. Leandro Trossard now hasn't scored in his last 20 matches in all competitions.

Based on that, it was hardly a surprise that both of them were benched for the trip to the Etihad. That said, while Arsenal's attack did look a little more connected in the first half on Sunday, it was another worrying attacking display, particularly from goalscorer Havertz who missed two gilt-edged opportunities.

We hope to see more of Eze on the left side but for Noni Madueke, his Arsenal career only appears to be going from bad to worse, hooked at the interval in favour of Martinelli on the right.

When the former Chelsea man first arrived at the Emirates Stadium, it was not met with universal approval and that's putting it lightly. Protests were held and winger was the subject of plenty of criticism.

Madueke's record at Chelsea (timeless)

However, once he knuckled down and started making an impact, plenty were keen to support him. Indeed, with Saka on the treatment table at the beginning of the campaign, Madueke dazzled on the right flank. His ability to beat a player was remarkable. He made things happen. How Arsenal could do with that now.

The fact of the matter is that the left-footed star is not dazzling anymore. He's not making anything happen, far from it.

Madueke-Martinelli-Arsenal

While the wide player is a maverick, someone capable of ripping up the tactical playbook and springing an opportunity out of nothing, he has been way off the pace since Saka sustained his latest injury after the EFL Cup final.

He has not scored a league goal since the 1-1 draw with Brentford on 12th February. He has not scored a goal full stop since the win over Mansfield in the FA Cup at the beginning of March. He is now without a goal involvement in nine straight games.

For £52m, you'd expect plenty more from a player who is quickly becoming one of the worst signings of the Emirates era. He's up there with Nicolas Pepe. In fact, he plays a little like the Ivorian, just with an even poorer level of output.

Both fleet-footed and possessing that aforementioned maverick play style, at least Pepe was still a regular scorer of goals. He found the net on 17 occasions in his second season with the Gunners.

Madueke, on the other hand, looks pointless. Not only has he ruined Ethan Nwaneri's development but he's also now taking valuable minutes away from Max Dowman.

Against City, it was arguably his worst performance for Arsenal yet. He ceded possession on 11 occasions from his 25 touches, meaning he lost the ball every 2.4 times he received it.

Arsenal player ratings vs Man City

David Raya - 6/10

Cristian Mosquera - 4/10

William Saliba - 6/10

Gabriel Magalhaes - 4/10

Piero Hincapie - 6/10

Martin Zubimendi - 5/10

Declan Rice - 5/10

Noni Madueke - 3/10

Martin Odegaard - 5/10

Eberechi Eze - 7/10

Kai Havertz - 5/10

Furthermore, he failed to produce a single key pass, was unsuccessful with all three of his dribbles and didn't have a single shot.

In what was Arsenal's biggest game of the season, perhaps their biggest league match in decades, Madueke was nowhere to be seen.

He was not the only one but considering his price tag and the level of ineffective displays we've seen in recent months, he simply has to go down as not just Andrea Berta's worst signing, but pound for pound, possibly one of Arsenal's worst ever.

That might feel extreme in light of recent events in north London but when he's taking minutes away from two of the finest players to walk through Hale End, you can excuse fans for feeling a tad frustrated.
