Opinion: Liam Rosenior deserves time and sympathy at Chelsea and there's one reason why

It has been painful to watch some of Liam Rosenior’s experiences in the Chelsea dugout this season, especially of late.

Videos on social media have been circulating of players ignoring him after being substituted, while Chelsea’s two defeats to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League were not pretty to witness either.

Rosenior is not blameless, and you cannot help but feel that the team would be in a better place if Enzo Maresca was still at Stamford Bridge.

One clean sheet in the Premier League and 35 goals conceded in all competitions under Rosenior 😳

However, Chelsea’s owners gave Rosenior a six-year contract. It would be unfair to sack the former Strasbourg boss without giving him the chance to compete with a side actually capable of achieving the club’s objectives. Right now, this current Chelsea team does not have the means to do that.

Chelsea’s poorly put-together squad should afford Liam Rosenior more time

Ultimately, Chelsea do not have the tools to qualify for the Champions League this season. It is a ridiculous thing to say after all of the money that the club have spent, but it is a fact. It is why they are currently sixth in the Premier League table.

Liverpool and Manchester United have not been amazing in the current campaign. Both teams have been inconsistent but are above Chelsea — United comfortably.

After beating the Blues 1-0 over the weekend, the Red Devils are now 10 points ahead of them.

Chelsea’s squad has been awfully assembled, and that is down to sporting directors Laurence Stewart and Paul Winstanley, not Rosenior.

Time for Liam Rosenior to be sacked? Or is this mess down to the owners?🤔

It lacks experience, does not have a reliable goalkeeper and is also missing a dominant central defender. A consistent winger who can add to Cole Palmer’s and Joao Pedro’s goals would not hurt either. Without those things, it is hard to see how Chelsea can reach their objectives.

They did last season, but United’s struggles and Aston Villa’s collapse towards the end of the campaign did contribute to that. Now that United have improved with the signings of Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Senne Lammens, look at where they are today.

All in all, Rosenior should not be judged until Chelsea make improvements to their squad, which seems likely.

It is thought that Chelsea are now open to signing more experienced players. Adding that experience to a squad that already possesses the likes of Palmer, Pedro and Moises Caicedo should help Chelsea get back to where they once were.

If Rosenior continues to struggle with a better-equipped squad, then the club can start asking questions.
