Almost Guaranteed: Chelsea win means Man United can start planning for Champions League next…

Manchester United have taken a giant stride towards achieving their primary objective for the 2025-26 campaign.

The Red Devils dug deep to secure a priceless three points at Stamford Bridge, courtesy of a clinical 43rd-minute strike from Matheus Cunha.

United have now climbed to 58 points, holding firm in third place and narrowly edging Aston Villa on goal difference.

According to Opta Analyst, United now have a probability of more than 98.5% of securing a top-five finish and bring UEFA Champions League football back to the Theatre of Dreams.

They currently hold a 44.44% chance of finishing third, but face fierce competition from Villa, who remain close behind with a 40.64% probability.

Those odds would have been even more favourable for United had Villa not snatched a dramatic 93rd-minute winner against Sunderland.

Liverpool also looked set to drop points, only to rescue victory with a stoppage-time winner against Everton.

These two results further highlighted how important it was for the Red Devils to have beaten Chelsea.

As things stand, United, Villa and Liverpool appear firmly on course for Champions League qualification, leaving Chelsea likely to settle for a place in the Europa League.

While INEOS may wait for mathematical confirmation, planning for a return to elite European competition can already begin.

United’s squad depth remains a concern, and significant reinforcements will be required to avoid unmanageable workloads on key players.

There will also need to be serious discussions over Michael Carrick’s future, as INEOS weigh up whether he has done enough to secure the role on a permanent basis.
