Former Sergio Agüero has entered the debate surrounding Julián Álvarez’s future, backing a potential move to FC Barcelona over reported interest from Arsenal FC as speculation intensifies ahead of the summer transfer window.
Álvarez, currently at Atlético Madrid, has emerged as one of Europe’s most sought-after forwards following a strong season in La Liga, attracting attention from several elite clubs seeking attacking reinforcements. ARSENAL are among the most persistent suitors, with reports suggesting the Premier League side are exploring a deal that could reach around £86 million as manager Mikel Arteta looks to strengthen his frontline.
However, Agüero — widely regarded as one of the greatest strikers of his generation — believes his compatriot would be better suited to Barcelona’s style of play. The former Manchester City forward argued that the Catalan club’s tactical approach and emphasis on technical quality align more naturally with Álvarez’s attributes
“Julian would be a good signing for any team today,” Aguero told Stake. “For Barca obviously everything depends on whether he feels comfortable. There is the player side and the club side. If things go well he’ll be a champion of the Champions League one day.”
“It’s very difficult for the player there, very complicated. But if Barca are looking at him and he is doing well, he fits perfectly. He loves football and has something not many strikers have: a very dedicated defensive side. Julian is a very complete player.”
Despite the mounting speculation, Atlético Madrid have publicly maintained that the player is not actively for sale, a stance that could complicate negotiations. Still, the scale of interest from clubs such as Barcelona, Arsenal and others suggests the situation could evolve rapidly if a significant offer materialises.
For Arsenal, the pursuit of Álvarez is tied to a broader effort to add dynamism and depth to their attack, particularly after inconsistent performances in key matches this season. ARSENAL are believed to view the Argentine as a player capable of elevating their frontline with his mobility and work rate.
Barcelona, meanwhile, are navigating financial constraints but remain determined to secure a marquee signing in attack. Reports indicate the club is preparing a major investment in the region of €80–90 million, with Álvarez identified as a priority target should conditions allow.
