Opinion: Chelsea thought they had a solution to save second half of the season but he's disappeared

There is no dressing it up. Chelsea have completely collapsed in the second part of this Premier League campaign.

Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Manchester United on Saturday means they have now lost four consecutive top-flight games.

The Blues’ chances of qualifying for the Champions League next season are now all but over. Their lack of activity in the January transfer window now looks even more questionable.

Question about Mamadou Sarr

Mamadou Sarr hasn’t appeared in five consecutive Premier League games

Chelsea did not do much in the last transfer window, with Mamadou Sarr being the only addition to their first-team squad.

They recalled him from his loan at Strasbourg, hoping that the 20-year-old would be the answer to their defensive problems.

The Club World Cup winners were determined to sign a new central defender and had prioritised a move for Rennes’ Jeremy Jacquet. But after failing to land the Frenchman, who opted to join Liverpool this summer instead, Chelsea turned to Sarr.

However, Liam Rosenior has barely used the Senegal international since his return to the club. In fact, he has not appeared in any of the Blues’ previous five Premier League matches.

Last month, Sarr revealed that he has no regrets about returning to Chelsea despite his lack of game time.

Chelsea shouldn’t have recalled Mamadou Sarr

In the end, no one has benefited from Sarr being recalled. Sarr is not being used right now and thus not made the team better.

From his perspective, the second half of this season has been a waste of time, development-wise.

With the form that Jorrel Hato is in, it is unlikely that Sarr will get a proper chance any time soon, while Levi Colwill could be about to return from injury.

Colwill recently featured in a youth game for Chelsea, meaning that he could be back very soon. It would now be a bit of a surprise if Sarr made another start in the Premier League between now and the end of the campaign.
