Mikel Merino could be back running within the next two to three weeks as the Arsenal midfielder continues his recovery from foot surgery, according to reports from Spain.
The versatile 29-year-old has been sidelined since January 25 when he suffered a stress fracture in his right foot during Arsenal’s 3-2 Premier League defeat to Manchester United at the Emirates Stadium. Despite the injury, Merino managed to find the net in what would be his final appearance before undergoing surgery in February.

Recent images from Arsenal’s London Colney training ground showed Merino walking without crutches, sparking speculation about an imminent return. However, [Spanish newspaper AS has provided clarity on his recovery timeline](https://www.football.london/arsenal-fc/news/arsenal-injury-news-mikel-merino-33807816), suggesting the midfielder will need another two to three weeks before he can resume running.
Arteta optimistic about return
------------------------------
The timeline raises hopes that Merino could feature for Arsenal before the season concludes, potentially providing a boost to the Gunners’ pursuit of silverware. Mikel Arteta expressed optimism about his player’s recovery when questioned earlier this month about a possible return.
“He’s another one that is going to push every boundary,” Arteta said on April 10. “He’s out of his boot now, he’s doing quite a lot of exercises already. He’s reacted really well to the surgery; he’s got no pain.”
The Arsenal manager added: “It’s more for the medical staff to go a bit further on that but I’m sure there is a chance to make that period shorter. If there is a person that can do it, I’m sure that’s going to be Mikel.”
International ambitions driving recovery
----------------------------------------
Merino’s determination to return stems partly from his desire to feature for Spain at this summer’s World Cup. The former Real Sociedad star played a crucial role in Spain’s qualification campaign and their Euro 2024 triumph in Germany two years ago.
Progress has been evident throughout his rehabilitation. During Arsenal’s Carabao Cup final appearance against Manchester City at Wembley on March 22, Merino was photographed walking on the pitch pre-match using just one crutch, indicating steady improvement from his earlier reliance on two supports.
The recent training ground images showing him walking unaided represent another significant milestone in his recovery journey.
While Merino continues pushing the boundaries of his rehabilitation, Arsenal’s medical staff remain cautious about rushing his return. The club will be keen to avoid any setbacks that could jeopardize both his immediate availability and long-term fitness ahead of the World Cup.
Arsenal will monitor his progress closely over the coming weeks as they assess whether their versatile midfielder can contribute to their final push of the campaign.
