Former Arsenal midfielder Emmanuel Petit has thrown his weight behind the idea of Arsenal pursuing Marcus Rashford this summer, amid growing uncertainty over the England forward’s future at Manchester United and on loan at FC Barcelona. Media outlets are reporting that Petit believes Rashford could provide the attacking spark Arsenal need as they aim to close the gap on Premier League title rivals — but whether Mikel Arteta will act remains to be seen.
Rashford’s loan season at Barcelona has been one of redemption after a turbulent period at Manchester United, where he fell out of favour and was sent out on successive loan spells. The 28-year-old has impressed in Spain, contributing goals and assists while helping Barcelona compete on multiple fronts.
Although Barça hold an option to buy him for around €30 million, reports suggest they are hesitant to activate the clause at present, leaving his future in doubt. Petit’s comments, amplified in the British and European football media, call on Arsenal to consider a move for the England international.
Speaking via Andy’s Bet Club, he said: “I would love to see Marcus Rashford at Arsenal, I think he’d have a big impact. What he has done at Barcelona, after he struggled for two or three seasons, has impressed me.
“The Rashford we know wasn’t there for a while and everyone was criticising him, at Barcelona he has recovered his qualities. I was quite surprised that he didn’t start in the Champions League second-leg against Atletico, although Raphinha has been very good for Barcelona, too.
“Robert Lewandowski, I was quite surprised that he was sitting on the bench for the two games. But coming back to Rashford, that could be something very good for Arsenal. He has something to prove coming back to England and they need wingers.”
However, the transfer picture is far from certain. Despite Petit’s backing, it remains unclear whether Arteta and Arsenal’s hierarchy will make an aggressive bid for Rashford this summer. ARSENAL have already been linked with other attacking options to bolster their squad and may prioritise players who fit a specific tactical blueprint or command a clearer role in their future setup. The club’s financial strategy and broader transfer plans could also influence whether a move for Rashford materialises.
In addition, Manchester United’s stance complicates matters. With United reportedly unwilling to negotiate beyond their set asking price and Rashford contracted until 2028, navigating his transfer could be challenging for prospective suitors like Arsenal.
Opinion: Will Arteta Make the Move?
From a footballing standpoint, Rashford presents a compelling addition for Arsenal — his versatility, Premier League experience and technical ability complement the Gunners’ attacking philosophy.
Yet Arteta must weigh up whether Rashford’s wage demands, consistency levels and long-term role suit Arsenal’s evolving squad. A pragmatic transfer strategy may shape Arteta’s decision: if ARSENAL target a player ready to start immediately and bring consistent output, Rashford ticks many boxes.
But if Arteta prioritises youth or long-term resale value over immediate experience, the Gunners may look elsewhere. Ultimately, while Petit’s endorsement adds intrigue, Arsenal’s decision will hinge on strategy, squad dynamics and market logic as the summer window unfolds.
