Arsenal will win the Premier League despite their defeat to Manchester City, according to legendary manager Arsene Wenger. The Frenchman was the last person to lead the Gunners to a title more than two decades ago.

The north London side still sit atop the Premier League, as they have done for the bulk of the season, but Pep Guardiola's side can leapfrog their rivals with a victory over Burnley on Wednesday evening, but only on goal difference.

Arsenal are under pressure to improve their form with five games remaining in the division. Mikel Arteta's men have lost two games in a row against City and Bournemouth.

City have not tasted defeat since January but have recorded draws against the likes of West Ham, Tottenham and Nottingham Forest in that time. Wenger reckons that they will slip up once again before the end of the season.

The three-time Premier League winner was impressed with his former side's intent against their rivals and name-checked the inclusion of four players that he liked in that game.

"I believe that Arsenal will win the league," Wenger said at an Abbey Road Studios fund-raiser for ProjectTwinning. "I deeply believe.

"It looks, to me, like common sense. I like Eze, Odegaard, Havertz and Madueke attacking (intent at the Etihad). Manchester City will not make the perfect run-in."

The former manager, now FIFA's Chief of Global Football Development, was in charge of Arsenal for 22 years but ended his coaching career when he left the Emirates. Le Professeur misses working within such an environment.

He said: "I miss it every day. I managed for 40 years. I miss the grass, the contact, the communication.”

"My luck in life (is) I was never attached to the past," he added.

Despite their setbacks, Arteta does not believe that he will need to motivate his players to realise Wenger's prediction. "I mean, if I have to pick the players to win the Premier League with five games to go in our hands and be in the semi-final of the Champions League, I think I should be at home," he said.

"So it's not the case. It's not needed. It's never been needed, even in difficult moments. So we go again, that's for sure."
