‘Not active’ Chelsea twist on Marcos Senesi shocks fans

Chelsea supporters had every reason to believe Marcos Senesi was heading to the Bridge this summer. The Bournemouth centre back ticked so many boxes the Blues desperately need ticking. But a fresh buildup has turned this story completely on its head, and the fanbase is not happy about it.

What Has Actually Happened between Chelsea and Senesi?

Journalist Ben Jacobs, who has always had strong information on Chelsea’s transfer plans, has delivered a verdict that directly contradicts what many were expecting. Speaking to The United Stand, he made the club’s current position very clear.

As per the reports, Jacobs said, “I am told, contrary to reports and full respect to the excellent journalists that have said Chelsea, but I am told that they are not currently active, even though they considered Senesi in January. ***The reason why is because Blue’s are prioritising height and aerial duel winning over only ball playing.***“

That is a significant shift. Earlier this month, Chelsea’s name was firmly in the conversation. Reporter Matteo Moretto had reported that Senesi’s agents were in close contact with Chelsea, Spurs and Man United. The picture looks very different now.

Who Is Chelsea target Marcos Senesi?

For anyone who has not been following the story, Senesi is a 28 year old Argentine player. Who has quietly become one of the most impressive centre backs in the Premier League over the past two seasons. He joined Bournemouth from Feyenoord and has not looked back since.

He is composed on the ball, reads the game very well and brings genuine Premier League football experience at a level the Blues currently lack in defence. His contract at the Vitality Stadium expires this summer, meaning any interested club can sign him without paying a transfer fee. For Blues, who have been crying out for defensive reinforcements. A free transfer for a proven top flight defender seemed almost too good to be true.

Where the player Is Likely to Go?

Liverpool have now emerged as the clear frontrunners to land Senesi this summer. Arne Slot earlier worked with the Senesi during his time at the club. Although that personal connection carries real weight in any transfer decision. With Virgil van Dijk approaching his 35th birthday and Ibrahima Konate’s future at Anfield still uncertain, the Reds have a genuine and pressing need for a reliable centre back.

Man United have also pulled out of the race, with sources suggesting Senesi does not fit the age profile or tactical style they are looking for going forward. That leaves Reds sitting almost alone at the top of the queue. Which is a big turn around for a transfer that just weeks ago looked like it was heading to the Blues.

The Blues have been bad all season since Liam Rosenior arrived at the club in January. Blue’s have kept just four clean sheets, three of those coming against Pafos, Hull City and Port Vale. The centre back position has been a revolving door of bad games. Levi Colwill has been left without a genuinely reliable partner.

Author’s Insight

Chelsea need ballers in defence. That is not a new problem and everyone connected with the club knows it. Passing on a free transfer for a good EPL tested centre back because he does not win enough aerial duels is a fine line to walk when the change is another summer of defense uncertainty. The London Blues must sign quality at the back before the new season starts.
