The latest transfer talk from Newcastle United as Anthony Gordon's future at St James Park continues to make headlines.
A number of Newcastle United stars have been linked with summer transfer moves despite their struggles to find consistent form in the Premier League.
The likes of Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento and Anthony Gordon are reportedly on the radar of clubs in the Premier League and abroad ahead of the summer transfer window and the speculation has become a regular subject of questioning at Eddie Howe’s pre-match press conferences. The buildup to Saturday’s deeply disappointing home defeat against his former club Bournemouth was dominated by talk of interest in England international Gordon after the likes of Arsenal and Liverpool were credited with an interest in the versatile forward.
However, it was growing speculation suggesting Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich were considering a move for the Magpies star that captured the headlines at home and abroad in the days leading up to the game. There had been reports from Sky Germany stating the Champions League semi-finalists view Gordon as backup and competition for former Liverpool star Luis Diaz on the left-hand side of their attack and described the 25-year-old as their ‘preferred candidate’ for such a role. There was also a suggestion ‘concrete talks’ had taken place with Gordon’s representatives - but there had not been any club-to-club contact initiated.
"I think that comes with the territory," Magpies boss Howe said when asked about speculation linking Gordon and a number of his team-mates with moves away from St James Park ahead of the weekend defeat against Bournemouth. “I think your best players will be the ones who are linked with high profile moves. It is certainly not helpful to us, it is not something we encourage or we want. We want players who are 100% focused, with no outside noise. Outside noise can affect players in different ways. Those players that you mentioned are all super professional, they are great players in their own way, in their own right. We need them to make the difference on the pitch and I would say the same to all the players.”
Far too much

There have been further reports regarding Gordon’s potential move to Bayern in the days following Newcastle’s defeat against Bournemouth with The Times stating the England international would be open to a move to the Bundesliga champions and revealing the Magpies had placed a £75m price tag on the former Everton star. However, former Rangers and Scotland striker Ally McCoist scoffed at such a suggestion and questioned whether Bayern would pay such a sizeable player for a player he does not believe would be an automatic starter in their side.
Speaking on talkSPORT, the former Rangers and Scotland striker said: “£75m? Far too much. Good player, I like him, but he hasn’t shown any level of consistency in the league. I would say his best form has been in the Champions League or certainly Europe. Would Bayern Munich be willing to pay £75m for somebody who wouldn’t be an automatic starter?”
