Champions League-bound; West Ham would be above Chelsea if Axel Disasi had joined last summer

It almost feels that, with every match West Ham United play these days, another stat emerges which shows just how much of an impact Axel Disasi has made under Nuno Espirito Santo.

One impressive Disasi stat did not go unnoticed among Chelsea supporters prior to kick-off at Selhurst Park on Monday night. Four clean sheets in his first eight matches since crossing the capital.

Some two hours later, the Frenchman had helped West Ham United record a fifth clean sheet in nine Premier League matches. Chelsea, in contrast, have just one from their last eleven outings.

Where would West Ham be NOW if Disasi had joined last summer? 🤔

Maybe survival would have been achieved already…

If only Axel Disasi had started the season at the London Stadium.

Without Disasi, West Ham were Championship-bound. With him, though, the stats are more Champions League than Championship.

They are averaging a clean sheet in 55 per cent of their league matches with Disasi in the team, compared to only four per cent prior to his deadline day arrival on February 1st.

Monday’s South London stalemate also saw the Hammers limit Crystal Palace to a single shot on target. That is the fewest West Ham have conceded in any Premier League match across 2025/26.

To quote Jamie Carragher, one of the finest centre-halves of his generation, Disasi and Konstantinos Mavropanos were a ‘joy to watch’. Fifteen clearances between them, Jorgen Strand Larsen and Jean-Philippe Mateta expertly marshalled. It was thanks to Nuno’s powerhouse partnership that Mads Hermansen spent the night claiming high balls rather than getting his shorts dirty with save after save.

The stats show that West Ham concede just 3.4 shots on target per Premier League match with Disasi, compared to 5.3 without him. They now concede an ‘expected goals’ average of just over one, compared to 1.75 previously.

Where does Disasi rank among West Ham’s most TRANSFORMATIVE signings?

The stats make for remarkable reading…

Their points per game average has risen from 0.8 to 1.4. The Hammers have also let in just nine goals in nine matches since Disasi made his debut in February’s 2-0 win at Burnley. More than half of those came in one afternoon; that 5-2 thrashing by Liverpool, in which he scored an own goal, very much the exception rather than the rule.

If these stats are extrapolated out across an entire season, it reasons that West Ham would have 53 points on the board had Disasi joined before matchday one.

That, remarkably, would put the Hammers sixth in the table, ahead of his parent club Chelsea, although the appointment of Nuno and Mads Hermansen’s re-call were also key factors in this much-improved defensive record.

Only Arsenal and Man City, the runaway top two, would have a better defensive record. West Ham would have conceded 33 goals rather than the current total of 57 if Disasi’s nine-game spell was expanded out across a 38-match campaign.

Don’t let anyone tell you there is no value to be found in the winter market.
