90% passing: Arsenal are interested in signing £43m midfielder on free transfer

Arsenal are keeping tabs on Manchester City midfielder Bernardo Silva, whose contract expires at the end of the season, according to ESPN.

The Portugal international has been a key player for the Cityzens over the past nine years, but he will formally depart on a free transfer this summer.

Silva has his sights set on continuing at the highest level in Europe, and reports suggest he may not be open to a reunion with Benfica at the moment.

Barcelona could be a lucrative destination with their recent La Liga success, while Arsenal are also monitoring the 31-year-old’s current status.

However, a move to north London appears remote for Silva, given the recent rivalry and history between Arsenal and Man City in the Premier League.

Arsenal unlikely to pursue deal for Silva

The 31-year-old signed for Man City from Monaco for £43 million in 2017. He has contributed 76 goals and 77 assists from 452 appearances for the club across all competitions.

Silva is primarily an attacking midfielder but has operated from a more central role this term. He has still chipped in with eight goal contributions and has been brilliant with the ball at his feet.

The Portuguese has completed 90 percent of his passes in the Premier League.

Silva seems keen on joining another elite European outfit. Arsenal are mentioned, but the Gunners are unlikely to make a move, given that he will be 32 in August and is no longer in his prime.

Furthermore, the hierarchy is unlikely to risk the wrath of the fans by recruiting Silva, who plays for a direct league rival. The player himself may not want to ruin his association with Man City, too.

On top of this, Silva is unlikely to be assured of regular playing time at Arsenal. He may have to accept a back-up role behind the likes of Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice, Martin Odegaard and Eberechi Eze.

ESPN’s story could be pure speculation rather than Arsenal considering a move.
