Leeds United have the chance to pile huge pressure on Liam Rosenior and Chelsea this weekend in the FA Cup semi-final, after our trip to Bournemouth tonight.
Before we can get too excited about the FA Cup clash on Sunday at Wembley, we have to take care of business away to Bournemouth tonight.
A victory at the Vitality tonight would almost mathematically confirm United’s survival. Then, a tantalising trip to Wembley looms at the weekend against Chelsea.
Liam Rosenior under huge pressure as Chelsea get thumped away to Brighton
Away to Brighton on Tuesday night, the Blues had an opportunity to rectify their current woeful form under Liam Rosenior.
They haven’t scored a Premier League goal since early March, slumping out of the Champions League places as a result and in need of a huge turnaround to salvage the season.
However, their brutal run continued inside the first five minutes when an unmarked Ferdi Kadioglu squeezed home the opener. Again, the Blues failed to score as they were soundly beaten by the side they have routinely signed players from.
Jack Hinshelwood doubled the Seagulls’ lead after half-time before Danny Welbeck added a third in stoppage time to see Chelsea drop to seventh.
Worryingly for Rosenior, Chelsea could drop as low as 11th if results don’t go their way at the weekend ahead of our semi-final.
Focus has to turn to Wembley and Leeds this weekend for Chelsea.
Rosenior, though, faces further questions over his footing at the club. And, he needs to find a way to get more out of his talented, yet faltering squad.
“Unacceptable in every aspect of the game,” Rosenior told Sky Sports. “I keep coming out and defending the players, that was indefensible, that performance tonight. The manner of the goals we conceded, the duels that we lost. Something has to change drastically right here, right now.
“We need to look in the mirror. I need to look in the mirror. But I can’t keep coming out here and defending some of the things that we’re seeing. Manchester United, genuinely result wasn’t there but I felt we turned a corner.
“But the general attitude, spirit was lacking – determination from three or four of the starting eleven. That’s nowhere near enough for this club. I can’t come out and lie. I tell the truth. That was an unacceptable performance at every level.”
Leeds United face a wounded and disgracefully lacking Chelsea at Wembley
How Chelsea respond to this absolute tirade from the current manager will be interesting. Ahead of Sunday, Leeds should see this as further evidence of the chance we have to beat them.
You could see it as a rocket up the backside to the Chelsea players against us. Some managers take these interviews as a way to motivate the squad, but that looks unlikely here.
The Chelsea squad look like they’ve downed tools. Being absolutely slated by the manager that already seemed a tough sell when he was appointed won’t help his cause of winning over the dressing room.
Contrast that with Leeds. The mood could not be higher under Daniel Farke, and he’ll be fancying this FA Cup semi-final.
