Opinion: The damning Liam Rosenior stat that proves Chelsea were wrong to sack Enzo Maresca

Liam Rosenior is hanging on by a thread at Chelsea, and some reports claim he is leaving Stamford Bridge. Little surprise, given a damning stat that has emerged, comparing him to Enzo Maresca.

Tuesday night’s defeat to Brighton was not simply a loss away from home, to a very good side under Fabian Hurzeler. It was an abomination of a performance, lacking any kind of fight or passion.

Chelsea downed tools in the last 20 minutes, and the stats proved it. For the 34th time in 34 League games, the Blues were outrun by their opponents. Chelsea’s 94km was bettered by Brighton’s 101km.

Chelsea fans, if Liam Rosenior was sacked before the FA Cup semi-final, who would you want to see in charge?

Reports say Rosenior has already said his goodbyes to the Chelsea players, following the 3-0 defeat. If the Chelsea hierarchy has made that decision, then be sure that they will have considered an emerging stat.

Liam Rosenior has lost more League games this season

Chelsea pushed Maresca out the door on New Year’s Day, after losing five of 19 Premier League games this season. Calum McFarlane managed the next two, losing one and drawing against Manchester City.

But since Rosenior has taken over, he has been in charge of 13 Premier League games. Yet remarkably, Rosenior has lost six of those 13. In six fewer games, Rosenior has lost more league games than Maresca.

Whether Chelsea make the decision and bite the bullet ahead of an FA Cup semi-final against Leeds remains to be seen. But what is damning for Rosenior is that he’s lost more than Maresca in less time.

What are the pundits saying about Rosenior’s future?

Having covered the game for Sky Sports, former Tottenham manager Tim Sherwood said that he expects Rosenior to be sacked by Chelsea. Especially, after Rosenior described himself as “angry” and “numb”.

Craig Burley says he cannot see how Chelsea can continue with Rosenior in charge, given the players looked like they had downed tools and were no longer playing for their manager. It was unacceptable.

But Frank Leboeuf thinks Chelsea need to retain Rosenior until the summer, simply because there are no viable bosses to replace him. It will be interesting to see who is in the dugout against Leeds on Sunday.
