Arsenal have secured the future of one of their most promising academy graduates, with 16-year-old defender Marli Salmon signing a pre-contract agreement that will see him turn professional when he turns 17 in August.

The Hale End product has already made a significant impact this season, making his competitive first-team debut off the bench during Arsenal’s Champions League victory over Club Brugge in December. Since then, he has featured three times in FA Cup fixtures against Portsmouth, Wigan, and Mansfield Town.

Rising through the ranks

------------------------

Salmon’s progression has been remarkable. Alongside his first-team involvement, he captains the under-21s and has made 18 appearances in Premier League 2 this season. He has also featured six times for the under-18s and currently represents England at under-17 level, with a step up to the under-18s expected soon.

The defender joined Arsenal’s academy at the age of nine and expressed his pride at committing his future to the club he supports.

“It’s a very big moment for me, for my family as well. I’m very proud,” Salmon told the club’s official website. “I’ve been at the academy since I was nine and I just want to give everything to the club.”

Following a familiar path

-------------------------

Arsenal have moved quickly to secure their best young talent, with Salmon following a similar path to fellow Hale End graduate Max Dowman, who signed a comparable pre-contract agreement in January.

“I’m an Arsenal supporter, and I’ve had some great memories so far. I’m so proud to have made my debut this season, I just want to keep pushing on still, keep my levels high and try to get as much experience as I can in the first team,” Salmon added.

While a Premier League debut may have to wait until next season, it’s clear both the club and Mikel Arteta hold the young defender in high regard. His early exposure to first-team football demonstrates the faith placed in his abilities and potential.

The timing of Salmon’s professional contract comes as Arsenal continue to prioritize youth development and provide clear pathways from academy to first team. His progression will be closely monitored as he looks to establish himself as a regular fixture in Arteta’s squad planning for the future.
