Marcus Rashford transfer twist as Barcelona make audacious Man Utd proposal

Barcelona are keen to extend Marcus Rashford's loan deal from Manchester United into a second season, with the forward himself preferring to remain with the Spanish giants rather than return to Old Trafford this summer. It is understood Barca have tabled the proposal to United, who are deliberating over whether to sanction a second loan arrangement.

The clubs have agreed a £26m fee for Rashford, but Barca have made an unsuccessful attempt to renegotiate the price. United have been standing firm on the clause, which remains in place until June 15. Rashford is keen to have his future resolved before linking up with England at the World Cup, provided he earns a place in Thomas Tuchel's squad.

It is understood both clubs will resume negotiations at the conclusion of the season, unless an agreement can be reached beforehand.

One potential stumbling block is the fact that Rashford's wages will rise to £315,000-a-week should United secure Champions League qualification.

Barca have been covering his contract in full, and United would expect this to continue if a further loan deal is finalised. It appears increasingly likely Rashford will pursue his career with Barca.

United are desperately seeking to trim the club's wage bill this summer, with Casemiro and Jadon Sancho both expected to depart.

This would save United in excess of £500,000-a-week, and co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has little appetite to welcome Rashford back to the books. Rashford has been thoroughly enjoying his time at Barcelona since joining the Catalan club on loan at the beginning of last season.

He is reported to have rekindled his passion for football, rediscovered some of his finest form and secured a return to the England squad.

The 28-year-old has netted 12 goals and laid on 13 assists to help the Catalan outfit establish a six-point lead over bitter rivals Real Madrid at the summit of La Liga.
