Liam Rosenior sack vindicates Ineos at Manchester United for two important reasons

Manchester United will be taking note of Liam Rosenior’s sacking at Chelsea.

After five consecutive Premier League defeats, Chelsea have decided to part ways with Liam Rosenior.

The decision comes days after their 1-0 home defeat to Manchester United, with a 10 point gap opening up between the two sides. And United now have a game in hand.

There are lessons Manchester United can take from this too. Here are the two key takeaways for Ineos…

Interim boss was the right move

Manchester United were level on points with Chelsea when Ruben Amorim was fired. Enzo Maresca had departed the Blues just 48 hours earlier.

United are now 10 points clear of Chelsea and are set to secure a Champions League spot.

Chelsea decided to embark on a brand new long-term project, appointing Liam Rosenior on a six-year deal.

Ineos had learned to their cost with Ruben Amorim that it is immensely difficult to introduce new systems mid-season, and chose to hit pause.

They appointed Michael Carrick on an interim basis, a manager who already has experience at Manchester United as a player, assistant coach and even as interim coach.

Carrick knew some of the players, and importantly he understood United’s identity. This meant he knew exactly what was required from day one, and was able to quickly get the team to buy in.

Rosenior was brand new to Chelsea, and to a club of their size. He was unable to successfully get the squad to adapt to his preferred style.

Ineos made the right choice not to rush in, like Chelsea did. They also made a shrewd pick with Carrick.

Now, Chelsea’s plans are in tatters and they are starting their manager search all over again, while Manchester United have had months to assess the market – they may even decide to stick with Carrick, as it has been so successful.

Chelsea have fired Liam Rosenior – he has been an epic failure compared to Michael Carrick! Where has it gone right at United, and wrong at Chelsea?

United’s squad was built for success

The failure of Liam Rosenior at Chelsea is not all his fault. A big part of the blame lies with their ownership group, BlueCo, for their disastrous transfer policy.

Last summer, Chelsea blew £150 million on Liam Delap, Alejandro Garnacho, Estevao and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, four unproven players. None of them have been able to produce with any consistency.

Add in their glaring weaknesses at goalkeeper and centre-back, and it’s clear that the Chelsea squad was just not built to compete at the very top.

Manchester United’s squad has been constructed more smartly. Ineos’ business in summer 2025 was centred on two proven Premier League forwards, Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo.

They have raised the floor at United, allowing the club to then gamble on Benjamin Sesko’s potential.

Potential is great, but you can’t build a whole squad out of it. You must have experience and know-how.

Whether it was Michael Carrick in charge, or Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, or Ruud van Nistelrooy, Ineos have built a squad that has made it easier for any head coach to succeed, unlike the Chelsea owners.
