John Terry has admitted he is worried about Chelsea after reportedly being snubbed for a caretaker role after Liam Rosenior was sacked. Rosenior was let go just three months into a six-year contract on Wednesday after losing five successive Premier League matches.

Rosenior was brought over from Chelsea's sister club Strasbourg in January to replace Enzo Maresca but was dismissed after Tuesday's abject 3-0 defeat away to Brighton. The club's hierarchy have acted, appointing under-21s coach Calum MacFarlane until the end of the season.

A club statement said: "As the club works to bring stability to the head coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment."

Chelsea's executives held a meeting on Wednesday over the next step, with the team now sitting eighth in the Premier League - outside the qualification places for any European football next season. And despite clamour from sections of the supporters, they opted against bringing in club legend Terry as an interim boss.

"I've been told John Terry wanted to [take over until the end of the season], but they didn't want him," Andy Jacobs said on talkSPORT on Wednesday. "And they told him in no uncertain terms that he will never, ever get the job."

Terry is currently part of a consortium in talks to take over Colchester United. The 45-year-old coached at Aston Villa and Leicester City before joining Chelsea's academy as a coach and mentor in 2023. He has previously expressed disappointment at the difficulty he has found in landing a management role.

But on Wednesday he was fully focused on the plight of the club he 717 appearances for. “I sit here worrying tonight about what is going to happen with our football club,” Terry said on TikTok. “Looking at us needing a manager after the weekend, I’m not sure when ownership are going to make a decision and bring a new manager in.

“Is a real top manager going to come to Chelsea Football Club at the moment in the position we are in? Can’t buy players, looking like we are going to have to sell potentially and that will be our best players, which is always tough.

“We will not be playing in European football, I hope I am wrong. Really, really frustrated and worried more importantly. I feel the anger, feel the frustration of the Chelsea supporters.

“But listen, I’ve seen 17 managers in my era come and go as Chelsea captain. What the players have to do is just get together and really focus on the weekend’s game and forget about all the noise around and everything.

“We have a massive game, it is really difficult, but also really easy to do as players to forget the noise and focus on what’s ahead of you and that is the Leeds game at the weekend. We’ve seen this time and time and time again, but maybe the future isn’t as clear as we’ve always seen.”
